East Peoria, Illinios is home to the Illinois Optical Merchants Association (IOMA) and has been a center for optical sales and service since the early 1800s. East Peoria was founded in 1847 by brothers George and Amos Hales as a farmstead on the site of present-day East Peoria Township. The City of East Peoria was organized in 1872 and became a municipality in 1954. The first people to live in what is now East Peoria were Arapaho Indians who came from Texas in 1836. They built their lodges near where the Chicago River now flows. Other early settlers included Englishmen John Gregg and James Caldwell, who arrived about 1840; Quakers John Fenton and Isaac Norris; Germans Gottlieb Danker and Johann Georg Weininger; French Canadian Pierre Laclède; Irishman Michael Davitt; Swiss man Christoph Wilhelm von Herderfeldt; Italianate architect Filippo Lippi (1586–1650). In 1847, George Hales established a farmstead on land that he had bought from the Arapaho Indians for $100 cash. In 1850, Amos Hales purchased additional land nearby from David Brownell for $200 cash. In 1871, both brothers sold their holdings to Lemuel Bogan for $2,500 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) of swampy ground adjoining their property which they donated to the town of East Peoria as part of its platting process In 1872, when City of East Peoria was organized under state law following approval by then-Mayor Samuel J. Mitchell, Mayor Bogan appointed Wm. Egan as its first treasurer/controller with responsibility for all aspects of municipal government including finance and budgeting From this point forward until 1954 when it merged into thecityofChicago), Wm . Egan served as mayor pro tempore or interim mayor whenever Mayor Mitchell could not make it to office due to illness or other commitments

It was named after John Quincy Adams, who was then U.S. Minister to France and later became Vice President under James K. Polk. The first permanent settler in East Peoria was Nicholas Long, who arrived in 1802 from Connecticut. He built a log cabin on what is now Second Street near present-day Roosevelt Boulevard. In 1804, landowner John Kinney donated land to East Peoria for an airport and town square. By 1820, East Peoria had a population of around 150 people and was known as "the Prairie City". In 1834, Mayor George Stephenson opened the first school in East Peoria with twelve students. The school closed in 1865 but reopened as East High School in 1914 due to increased enrollment at nearby North Side High School. After World War II ended, East Peoria grew rapidly and reached its peak population growth during the early 1960s with over 500 residents! However, this rapid growth led to social unrest; by 1968 there were only 50 residents living within city limits! East Peoria was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1500s. The area now known as East Peoria was part of Shawnee Territory until 1763, when the British declared their own territory in present-day Illinois. In 1809, East Peoria became a village under the jurisdiction of Springfield. In 1836, it became a town and in 1871, it was made an incorporated city.
