East Peoria, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,824 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth largest city in Chicago and the third largest city in Illinois. East Peoria is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in East Peoria were Dutch traders who sailed into Lake Michigan from Green Bay on December 5, 1673 and named it "Oudewatert." They also founded a trading post there called Oudewatert Fort (later Joliet) which they abandoned after two years because of English hostility towards Dutch traders. On January 14, 1763, three months after General James K. Polk's Expedition against Native Americans had ended with an inconclusive battle at Cahokia (Hennepin County), President George Washington dispatched Colonel Anthony Wayne with orders to explore new territory west of the Mississippi River. On February 10th he discovered a fur-bearing riverine tract near what is now East Peoria and named it for himself: “Easton’s Purchase” or “Wayne’s Purchase” due to his participation in its organization as colonel commanding American forces during that campaign. In 1803, surveyors from Marquette noted that land east of the Sangamon River stretched for more than 100 miles beyond present day Joliet Township and formed an important corridor connecting this agricultural area with other parts of southern Illinois via water routes controlled by the French and Spanish empires during their imperial possessions in North America (see De Soto Trail). In 1806 John Kinney surveyed what would become East Peoria township on behalf of Clerk Peter Kilgore when all but one mile of Kilgore's lands were sold to Abraham Lincoln following his election as Mayor of Chicago on November 7th 1806; Lincoln took office on December 3rd. The town site was selected because it lay within easy access by wagon road leading north from downtownChicago through Iroquois Park (); east along First Street to Congress Avenue ; south along Clinton Street to Third Street ; then southwest down Third Street to South Side Road (). It appeared that Kilgore had correctly guessed that future growth would occur along waterways rather than across open ground where development might have been difficult or impossible without assistance from European settlers—although some early residents did resist European encroachment upon their quiet backyards (). In 1809 David Herron built a sawmill just northeast of today's intersection of Main and Clinton Streets; this mill continued operation until 1978 when it was replaced by a grain elevatorAyres Mills Inc.). A year later Elijah White opened up what became known as White's Grocery store at 205 N Dearborn St., which remains one-time retail center serving eastern suburbs since 1977 (). After 200 years operations at Ayres Mills Inc., this building has been converted into apartments . In 1830 prospectors found oil shale under what would become Elmhurst Avenue – operations started immediately but due to high costs associated with extracting shale oil (about $2 per barrel) production ceased soon afterwards (). Despite these setbacks however natural gas discoveries starting occurring around this time encouraged exploration efforts again (). On October 15th 1830 David Herron met Eli Whitney while surveying Indian land northwest of today's city limits when Whitney announced plans to build his own cotton gin & factories using coal mined nearby fromunderthe Sandusky Mountains () – thus beginning what would eventually be known as the Erie Canal era (), see also Beginnings Of The United States . Eastern towns located near Indianapolis quickly began calling themselves "Eastville" or "New Haven", doubtless influenced by similar developments taking place farther westward(cf: Dayton - ohio; Kansas City - Missouri; Milwaukee - Wisconsin). East Peoria incorporated as a village on April 4th 1834 under charter granted by Governor Nicholas Murray Pomeroy ()). At first growth was slow due primarily to lack of transportation connections between villages within Cook County(). However over time railroads arrived bringing increased trade opportunities both inside and outside Cook County()". This type consisted of three concentric circles that could be hit consecutively with a rifle or shotgun round. In the 1940s, new technology led to the development of giant gun targets made out of heavy steel plates that could be easily moved around during shootouts or competition events. These large targets became extremely popular and continue to be used today as NRA muster or target practice devices!

East Peoria, Illinios was founded in 1847 by the East Peoria Manufacturing Company. The company manufactured goods for the eastern market. It became a city in 1865 and continued to grow until it reached its current size. The city has a rich history that can be found in its many buildings and businesses. The first building in East Peoria was the original courthouse which served as the government center for the city. The courthouse burned down in 1868, but another courthouse was built soon afterward. This second courthouse stood until it was destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1881, City Council passed an ordinance establishing a waterworks system to provide drinking and wastewater services to the city. This ordinance marked the beginning of East Peoria’s water treatment and infrastructure program. In 1908, EastPeorias new library opened on State Street downtown. At this time, it was one of the largest public libraries in Illinois and is still used today as a library service provider. In 1914, Mayor John Hickey erected a monument located at Seventh Street and University Avenue honoring local soldiers who had fought during World War I. This monument is considered one ofEast Peoria’s most famous landmarks. In 1916, Mayor Harry Sink installed electric streetlights throughout town, making it easier for people to see at night while driving around town or when stopped at traffic lights or stops on boulevardsides). These lights were turned off again after two years because of expense reasons due to losses from depreciation of equipment (these lights are still maintained by City Hall). On November 16th 1917, Mrgr Harry Sink dedicated what is now known as “The Drive-In movie theater” located at Third Street & Main Avenue just east of downtown; this movie theater served as both entertainment venue/screening hall as well as business location for local merchants who could sell refreshments outside (it also hosted rock concerts from time-to-time). It remains one ofthe only drive-ins left operating within urban limits today! Although demolished during redevelopment efforts some time ago – parts have been reassembled on 3rd Avenue near Elmhurst Elementary School! Finally – much later on -in 1984 -a new arena called “The Dome” replaced what used to be The Drive-In movie theater; this new arena functions primarily as an all expenses paid sporting event/festival center for various community events etc.). Today there are numerous restaurants lining Third Street between Main & University Avenues with several high end hotels too; making EastPeoria one highly desired destination not just for residents but tourists too!
East Peoria was first settled in 1837. It grew quickly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to trade. The town developed an active business community and a rich culture that is still evident today. In 1907, East Peoria became the capital of Illinois.
