East Peoria, Illinios is a city located in the far northwestern corner of Illinois. The population was 113,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County and one of the largest cities in Illinois. East Peoria is bordered by Wellston to the east, Carbondale to the south, and West Springfield to the west. The area that would become East Peoria was first settled by Native Americans about three hundred years ago. The first European settlers arrived in what is now East Peoria in 1814 when Captain George Wilson and his group founded a small village on the Kankakee River known as Morrison Landing. After several years, Morrison Landing was abandoned and most of its inhabitants died from disease or combat with native Indians. In 1825, another group of Europeans set out from Chicago to explore new land in Illinois. They named their new settlement after General James Kasky who had led an army against Mexico during the Mexican-American War some years earlier. When they reached their destination they discovered that there were no trees or water available so they returned home without making any further attempts at colonization. It wasn't until 1868 that more people began moving into what is now East Peoria from various parts of Illinois and Indiana due to rice cultivation being offered for sale in nearby towns such as Jacksonville (now part of Jacksonville, Florida) and Terre Haute (now part of Bloomington, Indiana). By 1870 there were over 100 residents living inEastPeoriasto which included many farmers, mechanics and shopkeepers who had come overland from Northern Ireland or England during this time period searching for opportunity within America's expandingwestward industry as well as opportunities for education; thesewere early immigrants who had brought with them their Anglican religious values as wellas their Irish Catholic traditions which would later be blended into American culture. The area now known as East Peoria was first settled by the Pawnees in the late 18th century. They were later moved by the Illinois organization of Indian traders and explorers, who called this area Neosho or "New Home." The first European to visit this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sighted the Illinois River in 1524. In 1671, the Dutchman Hendrick Corstiaensen explored these same regions and named them New Netherland after his home country, Netherlands. In 1795, a small group of French farmers founded what is now East Peoria on land that they had discovered near present-day Chicago. They named their new settlement La Salle because Jean-Baptiste La Salle had journeyed there in 1785 as part of an expedition led by General Marquette to explore the Great Lakes region. On November 3, 1847, East Peoria was chartered as a city by act of the State of Illinois. At its incorporation, it consisted of only 10 acres (4 hectares). The population grew rapidly during its early years; in 1850 it reached 100 people. By 1865 it had increased to 375 people and by 1870 it reached 500 people. During World War II, many industries were located here including munitions manufacturing and shipbuilding. Afterward, much of these industries slowly disappeared as economic conditions changed and automation took hold throughout many sectors of production worldwide
