East Peoria is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 85,813 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The first people to live in what is now East Peoria were the Potawatomi. They were followed by the Ojibwe and eventually by European settlers such as fur trappers, missionaries and traders who discovered this area in 1795 when Captain John Callender and his expedition traveled through central Illinois on their way to St. Louis. Easthampton Township was organized on November 3, 1836 from parts of Village (now Hoffman Estates) and Bloomingdale townships. The township was named for Easthampton Parish in England where George Washington was born on October 15, 1732. On December 1, 1861 East Peoria incorporated as a city under the jurisdiction of General Assembly No. 288 of that year which provided for its own government with a Mayor and City Council with charge “ principally” with streets, public buildings and parks; but also includes powers over schools and fire departments within its limits . The original charter called for an enrollment of 25 thousand residents but only 10 thousand actually enrolled because many residents left or became ineligible due to military service or other reasons during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The rest of the population gradually came back in after 1865 when race riots flared up throughout Chicago following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery all across America including in East Peoria where African Americans continued working into the late 19th century despite numerous discriminatory laws against them until they finally gained full civil rights in 1955 . In 1881 Stephen Alder bought 640 acres (247 hectares) at present dayHighland Park Boulevard east of I-80 just south of Dekalb Road for $40 per acre ($2 million at current prices). He began developing this land into what is today Highland Park Boulevard – one of Chicago's most prestigious neighborhoods – becoming one of Chicagoland's first large landowners .
