East Peoria, Illinois is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 881,812 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Illinois and has been through various waves of growth and decline over its history. The first residents in what is now East Peoria were local farmers who grew corn, beans and other vegetables for their own consumption and for sale to others on the surrounding farms. By 1836, East Peoria had a small town feel with a population of just 1001 people. However, within five years, this number had grown to 10,000 people due to immigrants from Hungary (then part of Austria), Russia (then part of czarist Russia), Poland (then part of Prussia), Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) and Romania arriving during that time period. During the mid-19th century there were several attempts by entrepreneurs to build railroads into this growing town but all failed due to lack of money or land. In 1871 an entrepreneur named George Stephenson built the first locomotive in Illinois – "Peoria" – which helped spur development in east Peoria and made it one of the fastest growing towns in America at that time. However, during World War I many businesses closed down due to wartime rationing; however by 1919 business back up had resumed so much that new buildings had started popping up all over town including two schools (one originally called “Russell School”). The economy crashed again during World War II when demand for aluminum products plummeted after Hiroshima bombing although some factories did reopen; however these efforts also failed to revive the economy again until more recent times when jobs arrivedin fields like computers etcetera. East Peoria is a city in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,936 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Will County after Chicago. The name of East Peoria comes from the Polish word "Ewangelicka" meaning "the good church." The first settlement in what would become East Peoria was made by Nicholas Wisniowski and his brother Jakub in 1837 as part of the Town of Warsaw (now Westmont). They named their new town after an angel who had appeared to them while they were praying near the old Mieszko I'scastle. After Wisniowski's death in 1841, his widow Anna built a log cabin on her family's farmstead south of town and called it "East Peoria". In 1881, when village incorporation was granted to East Peori Township, Mrs. Anna donated land east of her home for a Methodist Episcopal church and school. A combined sawmill and gristmill operated by J.C. Weller & Sons began operations on North Main Street just north of present day Kimball Road around 1900; this mill continued until 1907 when it closed due to lack of customers. A new sawmill opened on South Main Street adjacent to Kimball Road in 1907 by John Hirschhammer; this mill continued until 1926 when it also closed because of lack of customers. In 1925, East Peoria voters passed an ordinance establishing a public works department which functioned as the first municipally run waterworks system in Illinois In 1930, residents formed the Civic League to advocate for better community services which led to passage of ordinances creating sewer systems and building regulations In 1951 citizens organized with support from Mayor Harry Sizemore into City Councilman Edward Condon’s New Politics Committee which advocated for more progressive government policies including desegregation In 1987 City Councilman Ed Morse proposed annexing neighboring municipalities such as Danville and Bloomington but local leaders opposed annexation because they felt their interests would be better served by staying within their own communities In 1992 former Mayor Harry Sizemore offered then-Mayor Dick Raymond $1 million dollars to buy out all remaining members on City Council so that he could serve single term only instead thereof endorsing Raymond for re-election over challenger Jane Byrne . On November 3rd Raymond accepted the offer but did not take office due to term limits set forth in mayoral charter ; however he remains buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery . On January 1st 2009 Mayor Peter Kasten announced plans for citywide plebeian elections beginning February 5th through 8th which were successful with all candidates running without any major issues
The first permanent settler in the area was John H. Richardson, who came to East Peoria in 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1840, Mr. Richardson married Miss Adeline Hull, and they started a small farm near what is now Wright Road and Illinois Avenue. They also raised chickens and pigs. The Richardsons were among the first people to clear land for farming in what is now East Peoria Township. In 1853, Nathan Bedford Forrest offered $5 for every head of hair removed from any black person living within 12 miles of Memphis, Tennessee. This offer led to the Second American Civil War because many abolitionists believed that slavery would be replaced by Reconstructionism if Mississippi were taken over by Union forces.East Peoria's African-American community was very active during this time and many men enlisted in Confederate armies or served as informants for Union troops. After the war ended, most African Americans returned to their homes inEast Peoria until World War II when they began again to arrive in large numbers due to new opportunities created by federal policy known as "Operation Wetback." Many new African American businesses opened up throughout East Peoria during this time period including grocery stores, machine shops, restaurants and entertainment venues such as Yaqui Boys Club (now called yacht club).
