Bipedalism has a long and diverse history in East Peoria, Illinois. The first bipedal humans lived in the region over 10,000 years ago. The area that is now East Peoria was home to two major cultures of Native Americans: the Shawnee and the Sauk. These cultures were known for their use of dogs as mounts and as assistants in hunting and war. In 1819, John Stephenson set up a farm on what is now State Street in East Peoria. He named his land Stephenson Road after himself and his father, James Stephenson. This location served as an important early crossroads for trade between the Indian nations living around him and settlers coming from Illinois Territory. By 1830, Stephenson had developed a small town full of people who engaged in agricultural production, trading with those living north and east of them. The arrival of white men onto the scene during this time changed everything. With new technologies came new opportunities for exploitation. Coal became one of the primary resources used to produce goods for sale throughout much of eastern Illinois at this time. In 1833, George Wesseltman arrived inEastPeoria with his wagonload of coal from Coal Creek Mine near Decatur County seat Decatur Junction. For the next few years Wesseltman played an important role in developing business practices within East Peoria and helping to make it one of the leading commercial centers within Illinois Territory at this time (Wesseltman 1860). By 1840, Businesses such as Wesseltman’s had extended far beyond just coal mining into other businesses such as grocery stores, flour mills, hotels/motels, transportation services (including railroads), insurance companies (such as Andrew Johnson & Company) and more (Fowler 1991; Fowler et al 1990). This growth was due largely to innovations brought about by entrepreneurs like Wesseltman himself – ideas that helped create what are today considered some ofEastPeoriasta’s most iconic landmarks including Lincoln Park (1841),State Street Bridge (1850),the Grand Canalwalk (1862)and Eastern Market(1974). In 1870-71 Daniel Webster made an unsuccessful bid for Ulysses S Grant’s presidency on behalf of American Party candidate Horatio Seymour Dodge Jr.. In response to Webster’s failed campaign efforts against Grant he founded The Republican National Committee which soon became oneofAmerica’s most powerful political organizations thanks largely to its support for Abraham Lincoln during his presidential campaigns of 1864-68and 1968-72 (. Webster 1970). During these same years Buffalo Bill Cody began performing acts featuring Wild West shows across America – performances that would later be ReferredToAsCody Performances (). Bipedalism continuedto play an important role throughout these eras both physically and symbolically – many influential people throughout history have been characterized as bipeds because they exhibited traits typical only among mammals (. eGould 1978; Hrdy 1981). Today many people still consider themselves bipedal creatures because we evolved from animals that walked on two legs approximately 150 million years ago (. Schlosser 2002).
