East Peoria is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 100,711 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Illinois and the second largest in Chicago metropolitan area. East Peoria was founded on May 25, 1881 by George H. White and John Fitch as part of the town of Pierson (now part of Chicago). The first post office opened in 1884. In 1886, White purchased land east of present-day Lincoln Park to create what became known as "White City." On November 12, 1888, East Peoria incorporated as a city under the name "East Side". In 1893, Mayor Julius Caesar Chavez dedicated an early public park located near downtown to honor his late father Francisco Chavez Sr., who had fought for Mexican independence during the American Civil War and had been jailed in a nearby military prison. In 1896–97 Antonio Perez became mayor after winning election with 86 percent of the vote; he served until 1912 when he was convicted on bribery charges and served two years before being pardoned by President William McKinley. In 1916 Luisita Ramos became mayor after winning election with 73 percent of the vote; she served until her death in 1969. From 1961 to 1965 Edwin Epps was mayor; he left office after being indicted on federal corruption charges that led to his impeachment trial but eventual acquittal. From 1984 to 1989 Richard Mowery represented East Peoria on behalf of the -wide 8th Congressional District which included most of Cook County south of Michigan Avenue including much of Chicagoland including parts now within suburban Chicago communities such as Schaumburg and Oak Lawn along with some portions now within Evanston Township; Mowery alsoserved as lieutenant governor from 1983 to 1989 (and 1991–93). After redistricting following passage of state legislation based upon Census data showing large African American populations concentrated in northern Indianapolis suburbs (see Brown v Board Of Education), Mowery's district was reclassified as part)the 2nd Congressional District which excluded most southern suburban Chicago communities outside Evanston Township and set off new controversies over gerrymandering Deepak Chopra has written about here

East Peoria, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,513 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1847 by German immigrants and is the oldest continuously inhabited township in Cook County. The town of East Peoria was platted on November 3, 1847 by George Herndon and James Hickey. The site of present-day East Peoria was chosen because it lay within the limits of future Chicago. A post office called East Peoria was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it closed in 1902. In 1865, John Pritzker moved his family to this area from Milwaukee and founded Pritzker Heights east of downtown Chicago. In 1888 he donated land for a public library which became one of the largest libraries ever built in America. The first African American to serve as librarian was Mrs. Ada Coleman from 1924 to 1930. On December 1st 1912 Representative John Jealous (D-Peoria) introduced House Bill 1392 which would have outlawed polygamy within the state of Illinois; however it failed to pass due to strong opposition from Republicans across the state including Governor Richard Mapplethorpe who threatened legal action against any municipality that implemented such laws without his consent or blessing On February 12th 1913 Mayor Harry Jenkins (D-East Peoria) announced plans for an open air market on Elm Street next door to Park Central School; this market became known as "the biggest selling point" of East Peoriass development and remains one of its most popular attractions today
