East Peoria, IL is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 18,047 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Kane County and one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois. The city was founded in 1868 by German immigrants on land that had been part of Peoria Township since 1790. The first store opened in East Peoria on October 1, 1868 by Wilhelm Hahn and his brother Julius. On December 5 of that year, death struck the community when George Ayer succumbed to a fever after working from dawn to dusk as a laborer on a construction project nearby. In 1870, William Hutton purchased some adjacent land from Julius Hahn for $1 per acre (the equivalent of $336 today). This purchase enabled East Peoria to become an incorporated municipality with its own government and School District No. 2. In 1872, the first school building was erected; it served as the home of both the public schools and private academies until 1902 when it became known as East Peoria High School. During World War II, EastPeorias 4th Infantry Regiment served valiantly alongside their American counterparts during The Battle of Iwo Jima and many other engagements throughout Japan; they are cited collectively as "The Purple Heart Battalion". After World War II ended, many families who had incomes above poverty level moved into neighborhoods such as Westview Estates or North Park while others chose to settle near Chicago's central business district which would house them until redevelopment efforts starting occurring in early 1960s caused most east side residents to move again within several miles confines of downtown east Peoria along I-355/I-94 corridor
In 1811, the first European settlers arrived in what is now East Peoria. The town was established on a land grant from the Government of Illinois. It was named for General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1815, East Peoria became a village and then a city.
