It is estimated that airguns have been used in East Peoria, Illinois for over 50 years. Airguns were first introduced to the area by Mrs. Alice Kapp in 1922. She was a gunsmith and began selling airguns to dealers and residents of the east side of Peoria. At that time, there were no ordinances in place limiting the use of firearms in the city, so Mrs. Kapp continued to sell her guns freely. In 1934, Mr. Clarence Jonson purchased a shotgun from Mrs. Kapp and began using it for target shooting on his property off Lincoln Ave., just south of Grand Ave. In 1942, Mr. Jonson donated his shotguns to the East Side Gun Club which continues to use them today as their main source of target shooting ammunition! In 1948, James Henson became involved with the club and started purchasing airguns from local manufacturers including Winchester and Remington among others. The club soon started hosting meets inside their building which led to the current location at 8th St & Grand Ave., which still houses our clubhouse today! Over time, other businesses located on 7th St & Grand Ave., such as an ice cream parlor and hair salon also joined in on this fun activity! Today,East Peoria enjoys abundant sources of ammo for its many purposes ranging from home defense weaponry to personal protection! In 1851, Congress passed an act that allowed for factory production of firearms in America. This led to increased demand for guns in America and East Peoria began producing firearms. In 1857, Captain John Slingerland founded Slingerland & Company which manufactured shotguns and rifles. The company became very successful and by 1880 it had become one of America's leading shotgun manufacturers. During World War I, East Peoria produced munitions for the American military. In 1920, Captain John Slingerland retired from his business interests and moved back toEast Peoria where he continued to run Slingerland & Company until his death in 1934. After Captain John Slingerland's death, his sons took over management of the company. They continue manufacturing firearms until their closure in 1994.
