East Moline was founded by Methodists in 1871 as a small town on the banks of the Chicago River. The history of East Moline begins with Methodist missionaries who came to America in 1871 to preach Christianity to Native Americans living around what is now eastMoline Township, Cook County. The Methodists were among first groups of Europeans to arrive in what is now Illinois, although their arrival was marked by violence and chaos; they settled along present-day Chicago’s southern border with Indiana Territory (now part of Michigan). From their base at “Plymouth Landing” (now Plymouth Heights), Methodist preachers began preaching missions among local Native Americans, founding churches and baptizing many of them into Christianity. In 1873–75 Methodist missionaries Jno. Hosea Horton and Wm Beal organized an effort to establish a utopian community called “New Hope” near present-day Joliette Park – west side of Chicagoland Boulevard – which would serve as a model for future Methodist settlements across North America. New Hope failed due to lack of support from church leaders or local settlers; however, this event helped spur early Growth Street Baptist Church (later Amalgamated Baptist Church) into establishing itself as one of Chicago’s first black denominations in 1876 when only 1%of all African Americans lived within miles of downtownChicago proper.– Today East Moline has more than 20 churches belonging to various denominations including Baptist/Christian/First Presbyterian/Catholic/Hindu etc., making it one Religious Unitarian Community located outside Greater Chicago area!
In 1847, East Moline was founded by John F. Smith and his wife, Sarah. The village of East Moline was named after General James K. Polk because of the Battle of Flowers in Polk's campaign against Mexico. In 1870, the first school in the village opened with 26 students. The first post office was established in 1872 and the first doctor was hired in 1876. In 1902, the first telephone system was installed in the village. East Moline became a city on December 1, 1912 when it merged with neighboring town of West Moline to form a new city-county government. On February 14, 1920, the city-county government merged with the adjoining town of Davenport to form a new city-region government which is still active today as Davenport County Government
