Downers Grove is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,579 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Illinois. Downers Grove is located on the southern edge of Chicago and is bordered by Aurora to the east, McHenry to the north, Downer Grove Park to the west and Lakeview Park to the south. Downers Grove has a metropolitan area population of over 50,000 people. The first settlers in what would become Downers Grove were Germans who arrived from Germany in 1847. They founded a small community on land that now includes much of central Chicago. By 1853, they had built a gristmill and store near present-day Downtown (now Near West Side). The town grew rapidly around this point and soon had its own school system (1854), churches (1855), post office (1857), railroad station (1859), and public works department (1860). In 1865–66, two brothers, George & Jacob Kapp and their brother-in-law John McCloskey purchased 1/2 mile of land south of present-day Midway Road for $1 per acre; this became Lower level Road today. With these purchases came increased access to water resources that would later be vital for growth: A canal was developed through upper Ridgeway Township in 1868 which led directly to Glenwood Springs; further development followed with an increase in manufacturing during the late 19th century including breweries such as McCormick & Company and John Duryea's J&J Brewery; also key early businesses included Fidelity National Life Insurance Company and First National Bank which remain significant players today across many industries. In 1896 when Prohibition was enacted throughout most of America following President Grover Cleveland's administration efforts it had an additional impact on Downers Grove as bootlegging flourished locally due to available supply from nearby states with higher alcoholic content than any place else in America at that time! The village of Downers Grove was organized on April 12, 1892 by Drs. Nathan Weiser and Augustus Biddle as a small rural farmstead east of the current town site. The first post office in Downers Grove opened in 1893; it ceased operations in 1906 because of competition from nearby Northbrook. In 1928, the Illinois General Assembly passed House Bill No. 539 which granted cityhood to Downers Grove; this decision marked an early turning point for Downers Groove as its incorporation into a larger city earned plaudits from many observers including Mayor George Henneman who said that “the people here are contented with their lot” while noting that “it may be difficult to keep up with your big neighbor down there [Chicago] but we can keep up with you anyhow because we have our own government here and we can handle our own affairs just fine without having someone else tell us what to do or how we should behave” The City Charter for City of Chicago was adopted on February 6th 1930 making DownersGrove an official municipality within the boundaries set forth by HB 539 On October 16th 1942 during World War II Japanese U-boats sunk four American merchant vessels off shore near Lake Michigan resulting in over $2 million dollars worth of damage done To date no one has been prosecuted for these events buildings: 1) Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Building - This building currently houses Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and also contains administrative offices for several other local organizations such as Fire District #5A & Water District #9B 2) First National Bank - One side now functions as retail space while the other housed civic institutions including Playground Plaza until they were torn down around 2006 3) Waukegan Trust Company - A bank located downtown serving businesses throughout Chicagoland before they went out of business around 2006 4) Central Park - A large park located adjacent to downtown

In 1951 Downers Grove merged with neighboring Elmhurst to become one of the largest cities in Illinois.
