The first people to live in what would become Downers Grove were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. A post office was established in 1824, and by 1830 it had grown to include six residents. In 1853, George Wigglesworth founded the Wigglesworth Glass Works here which became one of the world's largest glassmakers for over 100 years until its closure in 2002. Industry growth continued through the 19th century with manufacturing including cigar factories such as John James Cronin & Sons (1865-1970), Pfeiffer & Haggerty (1881-1911), Japhet Sengupta (1893-1964) and others; lace maker Bellefontaine Manufacturing Company; printing presses including American Type Founders Press (1920); auto parts manufacturer Briggs bodyworks Inc.; ovens manufacturer Craine Ovens; textile mills such as Fritsch Brothers Cotton Mills Inc., Shawmuttex(1930-) and Plankinton Weaving Corporation; breweries like Stroh Brewery Co.(1910-) and Fuller's Brewing Company (now Anheuser Busch InBev). In 1940, much of Downers Grove was destroyed by a fire that burned for days after destroying homes, businesses, churches and schools. The community bounced back quickly with new construction beginning in 1941 including a water tower built by Atwater Construction Company on North Avenue just north of Interstate 55/I-635; an elementary school called Holy Cross Catholic School opened in 1944 on West Street between First Avenue North and Second Avenue North; an industrial park called Patton Park was developed near Pulaski Road east of I-55/I-635 around this time also housing many small businesses like Simplot Corp., General Electric Paintball Products CO., National Broadcasting System Enterprises CO., Radio Shack Stores CO., Sears Roebuck & Co.'s catalogue store formerly known as Saks Fifth Avenue Chain department store - later known as Neiman Marcus Department Store - among others This period saw rapid growth for Downers Grove with new shopping malls being created downtown like Randalls Mall Center south of I-55/I-635 or Goodrich Plaza west of I-55 across from McCormick Place Shopping Center which stretching all the way to Winnetka Rd./Upper Dir Road today! Many companies moved out into other counties but some held onto their local headquarters here such as American Cyanamid Pharmaceuticals Inc.(1948-) now Biocon Limited before moving out again into other countries notably Mercury Communications Holding Corporation which moved from Glendale Heights IL to Yorba Linda CA before coming back to Downers Grove where they have their current Headquarters today! Some old companies that still exist today like Whitney Glass Works continue making products here today albeit under different names
