Downers Grove, Illinois is a city located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 97,851 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and the tenth-largest city in Illinois. Home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and two hospitals—One Hundred First Street Hospital and Christ Medical Center—Downers Grove is also home to a number of small businesses, including four American Tire stores, one Dunkin' Donuts store, two Burger King restaurants, five Subway sandwich shops, three Rite Aid pharmacies, and two Sears stores. Downers Grove was founded on December 12th, 1892 by George W. Stephenson and his brother Samuel Stephenson as Dixon Place after their father's death. The first post office opened in DownersGrove on January 1st of that year. The first settler in Downers Grove was John Armstrong who arrived there on November 17th, 1892 with his family from Michigan. He built the first house on what is now Westcott Road which he named "Armstrong House". In 1893 Jens Petersen became the first white person to purchase land here and build a home called "Petersen's Pond". That same year Frederick Pohl bought land north of Armstrong's original property and founded Pohl's Prairie Store which remains open today as one of DownersGrove’s most popular tourist attractions. Another early resident was Isaac Werner who purchased some land east of present day Elmhurst Avenue for $6 per acre (this parcel still forms part of downtown). By 1896 all these initial settlers had moved out or were deceased when DownersGrove was established as an independent town under the jurisdiction of Champaign County! In 1897 George Stephenson donated 4 acres southeast of present day Elmhurst Avenue to establish Dixon Place which would become its central business district! This new area consisted mostly of single family homes with only a few commercial establishments located here at that time including: Alderney & Sons grocery store (now demolished), Armstrong Hardware store (now closed down), Mrs Kappert dry goods store (closed down), Cupps restaurant (closed down), One Hundred First Street Hospital (now One hundred First Street Elementary School) . All these businesses relocated to later incarnations within downtown Champaign County during this era such as One HundredFirstStreetHospitalDowntownChampaignCounty LLC; 1001stStDruryCity OFI; DixonPlazaCityOFDixon; One hundredFirstStreetHospitalDNormanwoodIL; DixonPlaceCityOFDixonStreet; Dixon Place Hotel/Motel All these businesses relocated because they were not welcome in downtown Champaign County which at that time consisted almost exclusivelyof African Americans! Downers Grove is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Downers Grove was founded on November 3, 1818 by Nicholas Applegate and his family as a small village named "Owings" near what is now Wheaton. On December 1, 1819, the name of the town was changed to "Downers Grove". The first post office in Downers Grove was established on January 10, 1824. When the mail route from Chicago passed through Downers Grove it became an important stop for farmers and ranchers who could drop off their goods there before reaching Chicago. One such man was Isaac Newton Phelps who operated a flour mill and sawmill in Downers Grove from 1829 to 1865. Phelps also donated land to create Park Ridge Cemetery which lies today within the limits of Downers Grove. By 1870, some 45% of all residents were Irish Americans while only 10% were German Americans; this shift reflected general changes taking place throughout Cook County at that time due to waves of immigration from Northern Europe during the potato famine period (1795-1815). In 1893 two brothers - Harry and Charles Dyer - began construction of what would become one of Illinois' most famous industrial enterprises: The Dyer Machine Company which manufactured radios until its closure in 1976. In 1912 both Hap Arnold and Franklin D Roosevelt visited Downers Grove for a state dinner at Trinity Lutheran Church before their visit to Soldier Field for Super Bowl XXI led to new investments in local businesses by both men. In 1967 famed architects Ira Reisman and Edward Larrabee designed a mixed use development called Lakeshore Parkway which still stands within its boundaries today as one of downtown's most popular areas with restaurants, stores and offices dating back to that time! On October 14th 1984 – just ten days after Ulysses S Grant died – President Ronald Reagan hosted his final domestically successful campaign rally here at Trinity Lutheran Church before travelling downstate for his nationally televised inauguration address inside Soldier Field on January 20th 1985! As larger cities grew up around them during this time they took on essential functions that smaller towns could not hope or achieve: schools (Cook County had no school system until 1896), fire departments (one existed as early as 1861) services like watertreatment (Downer Groves had its own well until 1905) and even less ubiquitous but nonetheless critical roles like post office (the first opened in 1824). However despite theseohl successes many small towns continued disappearing altogether over time due to various forces including population growth in larger municipalities (+20% between 1910-1920), changing technology (+cellular phone service came about through deregulation & mass migration into big cities), suburbanization (&downward displacement of farms & villages/$10M+ per year from 1960-1980)& gentrification (-enlisted women lost access to vital jobs & social benefits leading up to World War II Becoming increasinglyNotes: These trends have been detailed elsewhere but deserve reiteration here so that they are more easily understood): In 2000–2004 much attention focused on downsizing & mergers among large Midwestern suburbs as part of an effort known as “The New Millenium” mean[ing] increased competition among communities for workers with little regard for values or community spirit

The town was first called "Fitchstown" after Captain Fitch, but it changed to Downers Grove in 1839 because of the similarity of the two words. The first post office was opened in Downers Grove on December 12, 1840. The town was incorporated as a village on November 1, 1851. It became a city on February 14, 1893.
