Downers Grove is one of the most diverse villages in Illinois with a mix of cultures and religions. The Village of Downers Grove was organized on November 3, 1871 by John H. Payne and others as an unincorporated community north of Illinois Central Railroad tracks on the east side of Chicago.[1] A post office was established at Downers Grove on December 2, 1872,[2] and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1975.[3] The first settlers were Irish immigrants who platted what is now Downers Grove on land that had been part of the Township of Northbrook Heights. When Illinois became a state in 1868, Northbrook Heights became part of Davenport Township. By 1870, many German immigrants had settled in Chicago and new areas were developed near downtown including West Dundee (now Englewood),[4][5] Park Ridge (now River Forest), and Skokie (now Glen Ellyn).[6][7][8] In 1872 Payne donated 6 acres (2 ha) to the village for use as a public square. On November 3, 1876,[9][10] voters approved an ordinance allowing religious services to be offered free to all citizens over 12 years old within a 100-foot radius around the square located at 167 Wacker Drive. After being declined by other municipalities because they did not have enough space or money for such an ordinance, Payne dedicated his property to create downers grove village green which still stands today

The name Downers Grove comes from "Dover" in England but it actually means "down stream". It was first settled by Germans in 1847. In 1871, a railroad station was built on Downers Grove Road which became an important transportation hub for early settlers. Today Downers Grove is a predominately white working class town with few black or Hispanic residents. The first post office opened in1847 and has been in operation continuously since then. The most recent mayor of Downers Grove was Lori Swanson who served from 2013 until 2017; she succeeded Bruce Rauner who had previously served two terms as Mayor before leaving office to run for President in 2020. There are many restaurants in Downers Grove including Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Store (founded 1872), Dunkin' Donuts (founded 1935), Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery (founded 1886), Carl's Jr./Jenny's Diner (opened 1938), Grumpy Cat Boutique Café (established 2009) andmany more!
