The Downers Grove Armory was founded in 1976 by then-Mayor Tom Barrett and his wife, Jeanne. The original Laser Range was located on the property of the now-defunct Village grocery store on Racine Street. The Laser Range became a vital part of many law enforcement operations in Upstate Illinois due to its accuracy and ease of use. It quickly became well known throughout the region as a premier source for laser sight training. In 1992, Mayor Barrett donated the Armory’s entire 3-acre property to the City of Downers Grove for use as an open community center and park. In 2001, it was renamed “Tom Barrett Park” in his memory. Today, the Laser Range remains a vital part of downtown Downers Grove’s cultural heritage and continues to provide amazing opportunities for shooters across all levels of experience. Downers Grove is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 112,361 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous municipality in Illinois. Downers Grove is located on the border of DuPage and Kane Counties and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to sight what would become Downers Grove was Giovanni Battista Vespucci, who landed on the shores of Lake Michigan on November 7, 1492 after sailing from Venice with his Portuguese crewmates.Vespucci's sighting gave rise to the name "Dungarpe" which can still be seen today on a small stream that runs through downtown Downers Grove. The village began as a French mission known as La Prairie (later renamed Prairie du Chien) and was founded by Jean Baptiste Pointe de Lacrosse in 1795. Lacrosse established an agricultural community near what would become downtown Downers Grove due to his discovery of fertile land east of Mayfair Road and west of Interstate 95 between 1824 and 1830; this land became known as Back Bayou (now part of Kankakee Valley). In 1834, John Davenport served as Postmaster General for Illinois under President Andrew Johnson and ordered all post offices be moved from Chicago to more central locations throughout the state so that mail could be delivered more quickly. Davenport also encouraged development within town limits with grants for churches, schools, businesses and homes; this led to such early pioneers as Ebenezer Goddard (1796-1860), George Pullman (1810-1888), Isaac Nott (1822-1902) and others developing property within town limits across Back Bayou until it became largely residential beginning in earnest around 1860 with growth outpacing available farmland In 1857, when two brothers named Orson Welles McCarty purchased 640 acres alongPresent Day I-294 south of present day Wacker Drive in what would become downer grove they named their new land "McCarty Cornfield". The first house built there was called 'Welles' House' which remain standing today inside city limits but now used by local history museums dating back to 1923 when it served as headquarters for three different Historical organizations - Museum Of American History(Museum Of Modern Art), Field Museum( National Museum Of American History)and Chicago Academy Of Fine Arts before finally being sold off in 2006 It should also be noted that one brother - Orson Welles McCarty II - acquired 1120 acres adjacent to present day McCarty Cornfield including much later addition called North Park which comprises about 3/4ths or 4 square miles located just north or east of Wacker Dr., bordered by Jarvis Rd./Harvey Rd./Enderhill Rd./Wickerburg Pkwy/Oak Lawn Ave while other areas are included in current neighborhoods like Hyde Park/Lakeview etc... wellesley mccarty estate has been subject some controversy over years mainly because owner has refused numerous requests for access to resources like water wells etc... school board members have recently started offering tours although no information we have indicates if anyone actually visits these sites anymore since purchase
Downers Grove was founded in 1847 by General David Dixon and his family. The town became a village in 1881, and it was made a city in 1956.
