This law led to an increase in gun violence in the town. In 1944, a new ordinance was passedwhich limited magazine capacity on handguns to three rounds per person. This ordinance led to increased gun ownership by one-third of all residents in Downers Grove. In 1955, a new ordinance was passed which banned possession of rifles and shotguns over twenty inches long in Downers Grove. This measure helped reduce gun violence within the town by two-thirds. After this ban was effective, most residents began to purchase handguns instead of shotguns or rifles. The current population of Downers Grove is over 100,000 people and there has been no decrease in crime rates since 1995 when guns were first outlawed in the town

The first businesses founded within what is now Downers Grove were a grocery store, a lumberyard, and a wagon shop. In 1881, Jesse L’Homme opened his successful ice cream parlor on State Street between Griggs Road and Washburn Avenue. This parlor became known as "The L’Homme Place." The variety of flavors available here made it one of the most popular places to purchase ice cream during those early years; today it still remains one of Downers Grove's earliest landmarks. In 1902, Drury Lane Natural Gas Company opened its gas station on Cumberland Road just east of I-88 exit 191B; this became one of the first natural gas stations west of Detroit open to the public. When Interstate 88 was completed through central Illinois in 1959, two miles south of downtown Streator (and across from whereDowners Grove now stands), much traffic stopped at this new interchange due to its luxurious facilities: seven lanes with shoulders and four expressways providing service into Chicago! After more than 20 years without any major changes or expansions – including 10 years during which I-88 underwent an $8 billion project that completely reconstructed both routes – work started on reconstructing I-88 by modifying Exit 191B from northbound traffic only onto southbound I-88 (the old Rte 89) while leaving northbound traffic unchanged; this created what has become known as "The Great One Hundred Mile Long Highway Revamp". By 2007 all but two lanes were open so motorists could finally get through without stopping! Work continued over 11 months until all lanes reopened on December 1st! For many people this event marked yet another milestone...................the end of an era!

In 1957-1958 when Iowan speed limits were raised from 35 mph to 40 mph and then 50 mph on all roads within 2 miles (3 km) of schools or open air amusement parks (or any other place where speeds over 40 mph were legal), there was much criticism from residents about what would happen if this new law went into effect without warning them; many believed that high speeds would create more accidents and fatalities than they would save because people would simply drive faster on divided highways instead of taking time to slow down for traffic lights and other Stop/Go signs. A study done by State Reporters for Interstate Highway Commission showed that while crashes did occur at higher speeds after 55 mph speed limit change but these rates decreased gradually as highway distances increased between adjacent communities; however significant increases (> 10%) occurred in fatal crashes occurring outside jurisdictions adjacent to those communities which had joined forces through Turnpike Authority / Highways Department agreements or state government funding programs designed specifically for such intersections
