It is one of two cities in Cook County, Illinois, and it is also one of two counties in Cook County. In 1847, three men from what is now Downers Grove founded a log cabin on a small tract of land that they named after their village in England – Downers Grove (or Downton). The first town meeting was held on November 10, 1847. A post office called "Downton" was established in 1868, and remained open until it closed in 1959. Downers Grove has been inhabited by humans since at least 12000 BC when Stone Age Egyptians discovered petroglyphs on its surface. The first European visitors to Downers Grove were Dutch traders sailing along the Great Lakes during the 16th century who noted Native American villages near where they landed. French explorer Jacques Marquette visited Downers Grove on his way northward from Lake Michigan during 1795 and noted an Indian village about five miles west of present-day Downers Grove on April 5 that he tentatively called La Salle's Village because France had sent an expedition led by Marquette there to trade with the local Sauk people four years earlier. By 1800, all but two families living east of Kedzie Ave had moved out west into Indiana Territory due to persecution from neighboring Quakers following Reverend Henry Dearborn's Pequot War campaign against these same Indians; only six houses remain standing today within this original platted community which extended northwest past Kedzie Avenue to current Day Iroquois Rd., just south of Humboldt Park Road across ravine from Midway Airport Highway service station; many early buildings have been lost or destroyed over time including much smaller dwellings dating back 300 years! The village became known as “Downton” after Englishman Arthur Downton purchased part of it in 1865 for $5 per acre (the purchase price for land then worth $160 per acre!). After many incarnations including several changes hands between various proprietors before finally being acquired by Moody’s Investors Service Company (Moody’s) as part of their real estate empire culminating with its sale to United States Steel Corporation (US Steel) back in 1957—Downton remains America’s most continuous continuously used name for a single unincorporated community located within Cook County since at least 1867! Home Rule Act No 2 passed by voters approved January 1st 1915 providing for self-government within limits prescribed by county board; this act gave rise to today’s unique form government with City Manager appointed officials responsible solely to City Council members via rules & regulations promulgated through City Manager rulemaking powers pursuant to section 7405(a) Charter Amendment #1 ratified February 13th 1978! On July 1st 1988 new charter amendment #2 amended section 7405(a) so that Mayor & City Clerk are both elected jointly every 4 years subject only thereto To recall vote taken October 6th 1998 following revelations that Mayor refused emergency request for personnel records relating specifically…to former Aldermanic Candidate John Cullerton…. [sic]
