Downers Grove, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago and the most populous municipality in Cook County. The population was 59,569 at the 2010 census. It is located within the Chicago metropolitan area. Downers Grove has a total area of 54 square miles (142 km²). The village of Downers Grove was organized on November 5, 1892 from part of Northbrook Township. The first mayor was John Collins. At its peak, Downers Grove had a population of over 100 people and two banks- the First National Bank and the Citizens Savings Bank. In 1902, it lost its charter because it failed to meet financial criteria set by the state legislature as well as other requirements set by then Mayor Harry Washington. In 1912, Downers Grove built its first schoolhouse which still stands today on Main Street near Huron Avenue. This building served as both a Elementary School and High School until 1955 when districts were consolidated into one school system in Illinois. In 1916, five families moved from Sylvan Park to established what would become known as Glenview Township due to their proximity to Chicago's increasingly industrialized areas and increasing demand for land for housing development outside of Chicago's downtown core; Glenview became one of only two townships in Cook County not annexed byChicago after city annexation limits were increased in 1870 pursuant to new legislation authored by Representative George Romney (R- Chicagoland) based on his experiences living northward through Evanston Township into which he had been elected as an Alderman prior to his election as governor in 1896). Today Glenview Township boundaries continue southward along Skokie Boulevard past Westmont Drive where they meet with Kildeer Road & Racquetball Course Rd., also unincorporated community that forms part of east Skokie Township line - this entire township has since been annexed by Chicago.) Downers Grove was first settled by German farmers in 1847. By 1872 it had grown to include Poles and Irish immigrants. The influx of black slaves began in the early 1800s and created a Mixed Race community that continue to exist today. In 1915 an incorporation bill was passed which allowed for black residents to vote within the town limits. When World War I started Downers Grove became one of the largest American cities with over 100,000 people living on its outskirts. Afterward many residents moved into downtown where there were more jobs and housing than available elsewhere in the city or outside of Chicago due to restrictions placed on how much land could be developed without state approval. The 1920s were a time when Downers Grove reached its peak with businesses like Sears Roebuck & Co., IBM, General Electric, Armour Research Laboratories and Chrysler Corporation all locating their headquarters here during this decade-long period known as "the Silent Era." However by 1930 these companies had all relocated or closed down leaving behind heavy concentrations of poverty and unemployment among Downtown's working class citizens (a situation still extant today). In 1933 Mayor John Rhea designated Downers Groove as "the People's Town" after seeing public outcry over high rates of crime and lack of opportunity among its citizens-a phenomena he attributed to social evils such as corruption scandals plaguing other large American cities during this time period such as New York City or Los Angeles-or simply because it felt like everyone else was doing just fine despite his constituents' hardships (an observation repeated throughout current day America). This designation helped spur development along Roosevelt Road near Michigan Avenue becoming one of America's most vibrant neighborhoods during this era marked by growing professional firms like Apple Inc., Google Inc., Amazon Web Services and Uber Technologies LLP while also witnessing waves of new arrivals including Hispanics/Latinos who were seeking better opportunities than what they experienced back home in Mexico City or Spanish Harlem when they first came ashore looking for workAmericanization policies enacted during this time period aided by President Franklin D Roosevelt led to increased diversity among American families through open inclusion education programs which offered free tuition at local universities for domestic students from minority backgrounds; however some critics say these initiatives have caused displacement amongst low income communities who now find themselves targets for gentrification processes .
