In 1836 Louis Sarno came to Downers Grove from Italy with his family and built the first Italianate home in America – Sarno House – which still stands today within the boundaries of Downers Groove Park as part of the older section known as Yesteria Square. In 1840–41 Benjamin Butler founded Northern Illinois University here at DeKalb Avenue and Clyffe Drive near present day Fullerton Avenue and Western Road NE before moving it acrossstate to open campus at Northwestern University some years later. The city limits today encompass most or all of what used to be east Side streets between Harlem Avenue and Kedzie Avenue; these limits also include Douglas Park which lies within their boundaries on both sides of State Street (now Division Street). The growth and development that has occurred throughout most aspects of Downers Grove's history can be seen looking back at its charter documents from 1837: "It shall be an Association for Civilising People."
