Downers Grove, Illinois is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 64,871 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth most populous city in Illinois and the third largest city in Chicago after Chicago and Detroit. The name "Downers Grove" is derived from Indian words meaning "place of low ground." In 1803, John Downer founded a fur farm in what is now Downers Grove, naming it for his brother-in-law, James Downer. The first home built there was a log cabin heated by an opening in the ground that served as a fire pit. A sawmill started up on the river near where it currently stands in 1827 and soon production outgrew need for wood so downer grange became an available site to build homes also. In 1830, Nathan Kilburn bought land east of present day State Street between Oak Park and River North to build what would become Kilburn Place. By 1840 about fifty settlers had moved there from all over Upper Canada including Toronto under subscription of £50 each payable by July 1 each year to purchase 640 acres (2 km²). In 1865 John Stephenson located here on land he had purchased from John Kilburn two miles east of present day Prairie Avenue with intentions of erecting mills on the stream running through his property into Lake Michigan; this plan never materialized because Stephenson died before construction could begin. However, because Downers Grove lay at one end of Stevenson's tract much waterpower was needed to generate enough power to drive turbines necessary for spinning woolen yarn which led directly to development of heavy engineering activities associated with early industrialization such as foundries, smelters and machine shops along Stevenson Boulevard today known as North Side Drive which once ran parallel to Wacker Drive today called South Side Drive
