Pemberton purchased 640 acres (250 ha) in present-day Backusville Township from John Larkin for $5 per acre ($0.76 per ha). Today's commercial district began to form soon after Pemberton's purchase when he started construction on his home, called "Pemberton House" (later known as "Olde Towne House"), which still stands today at 6th Street and North Avenue in downtown Backusville Township. In 1850, Pemberton married Sarah Ann Boggs, who was also from England; they settled on their farm about two miles northeast of present day downtown where they built what became known as Olde Towne House (now known as "Pemberton House"). In 1852, Pemberton organized what would become the first farmers' market inDuPage County when he set up a booth at Second Street and Water Street in downtown Urbana; it served local farmers until 1857 when market organizers transferred it to 5th Street and Park Avenue in downtown Chicago so that it could be located near current-day Millennium Park. In 1853, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States; shortly after his inauguration speeches were delivered at Peoria Castle by Ulysses S Grant (1863–1865), Lincoln stopped by Olde Towne House for dinner where he met Mrs. Abraham Lincoln before leaving for his inauguration speech performance at Ford Hall across State Capitol Square in Springfield on April 12th 1865 Mrs. Abraham Lincoln later donated her old kitchen cupboard - now used as an exhibit room - to Congressional Reception Room inside Constitution Plaza building where she had stored some furniture while living upstairs adjacent to Repository Building — all this occurred prior to her assassination on February 14th 1865 just one day after her husband's inauguration ceremony! The cupboard remained inside Capitol Plaza until November 3rd 1966 when it moved out into Independence Hall lawn adjoining Great Mall before being put back into storage again until 1982 following renovation which removed much internal woodwork reveals & restored original plaster finish

It grew quickly due to its location next to two railroad lines and its natural resources: agriculture, lumbering, and gas wells. The city's growth continued until the Great Depression when it lost many of its businesses and residents. From 1941 through 1949, Downers Grove was part of Nazi-occupied Austria; during World War II it served as an internment camp for Japanese-Americans. After the war, Downers Grove regained some of its former prosperity thanks to new industries such as education and healthcare that began arriving after World War II. In recent years, however,Downers Grove has been struggling with high levels of poverty and crime rates which have made it an uncomfortable place to live for many people.

The downtown business district around State Street was redeveloped as one of Chicagos largest mixed-use districts for retail shops, restaurants, bars and office space until it was replaced byien Park in the 1990s. Downers Groves post office opened on November 1st 1847 which closed on July 16th 1865 due to changes in USPS service policy that allowed Postmaster General Jesse Tinkler to open more rural mailboxes without having to surrender mail collected at rural post offices
