The shooting of John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963 left America reeling as the president was shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. This event forever changed American gun culture and attitudes towards firearms, as well as the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. The tragedy also inspired a movement to create laws and regulations governing gun ownership in the U.S., which continues to this day. In 1911, Congress passed an act that banned handguns in all states except Maine and Vermont. In 1934, Congress passed another act that made it a felony for anyone under the age of 18 to possess or use a handgun without a license from a state or local law enforcement officer. These laws were repealed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938, but they returned into effect after he became president. After World War II, Americans began storing more handguns than ever before in preparation for future wars. The number of handgun permits issued increased from 1,000 per year during World War II to over 5,000 per year by 1960 (1). The town rapidly grew thanks to its landmark schools (the first being Academy Hill School opened in 1861), churches (First Baptist Church became Christmastime Prayer House in 1865), businesses (a sawmill became J&L Cutlery in 1865) and homes built by settlers or given away by friends or families who had fled slavery or found new opportunities elsewhere.
