The first town meeting was held on November 4th and 7th of that year to discuss some ideas for governance. A committee was formed to look into creating a government for the new settlement. On January 9th, 1840 David Winthrop organized a group of men and boys to purchase two acres (0.8 km2) of land at what is now Elmhurst Rd., between Deerfield Rd./I-88 and Wabash Ave./US-41 for $5 per acre (1/4 mile). This property became known as “Winthrop’s Corner” because it lay within Winthrop’s holdings when he acquired it from Samuel Greenough in 1838. This initial plot of land would later be split into four parcels which formed what is now downers grove center Park . In 1842 another group purchased 2 ½ acres (10 hectares) further east from Elmhurst/Wabash intersection for $10 per acre (3/8 mile). This parcel became known as “Hurst” because subscription for building lots there began soon after its acquisition by George Hull who had purchased it from Ebenezer Hughes in 1841 before Indian Removal commenced.. In 1850 Isaac Hinman donated 100 acres (40 hectares) northeast of downtown Chicago to establish Forest Home Farm which would serve as farmland surroundingChicago until 1893 when forest reserves were created under President Cleveland's Executive Order #744 prohibiting such seizure or sale without proper compensation to landowners! After years of discussion over who should manage thisland various organizations includingoctagon company were formedand submitted plansfor developmentto local AuthoritiesIn1875waterfrontpromenadewascreatedandthecityofdowntownwasitexistingcompletedin1887! Development proceeded slowly at first with most residents living off their farmlands until 1886 when heavy rains caused flooding that destroyed much property insidethecitieshore! By 1902 3rd Ward Alderman John McCormack had sponsored legislation appropriating $25000 towards constructing storm water pipes throughout City limits making Downers Groove one of the few cities in America using this kind of infrastructure ! Streets were renamedafter prominent citizens & prominent businesses quickly responded with names such as Temple Place West & Southside Plaza while popular shopping areas like Devon Village & Ashland Shopping Center emerged ! In 1907 Minton Piano Factory opened up shop just northwest of downtown adjacent to Lake Shore Drive !! The factory produced thousands of pianos each day until its closure in 1978 !! Today many famous brands are manufactured here including Steinway & Sons , Yamaha , Kawai etc... Many talented individuals have been born or raised here including Pulitzer Prize Winning composer Aaron Copland , Grammy Award winning songwriter Jay Z and entrepreneur Elon Musk !!
