After the war, Downers Grove experienced rapid suburban growth which continues to this day. The city limits were expanded to encompass neighboring municipalities in 1972 and again in 1984. Today, Downers Grove is an expensive suburb with high levels of education and employment opportunities for residents who are middle class or above but retains some of its cultural attractions including two small theaters (one on State Road 825 just east of Interstate 90), two libraries, three parks (including one with a large hockey rink), four restaurants and several bars/pubs along State Road 825.

Downers Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the north side of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Downers Grove was founded in 1847 by John Dolan and his brother Nicholas Dolan as a farmstead on the east side of present-day Downers Grove Boulevard. The first school in Downers Grove was opened in 1851. In 1865, John Dolan donated land for a public library which became one of the largest municipal libraries in America. In 1911, William Haddon Henning donated land for a large park that now includes much of downtown Downers Grove. In 1922, Harry Bemis served as mayor and developed what later would be called "theHenning Plan." This plan called for development of downtown along Lake Michigan Boulevard with high-rise buildings and shopping centers to attract business and industry to downer grove while preserving its agricultural character and unique architecture. The city's economy has been based largely on manufacturing since the early twentieth century; however, this economic base has slowly begun to declines over time due to competition from neighboring cities and other production industries within Cook County or outside Illinois altogether. However, recent years have seen some resurgence in activity including heavy investment by both private businesses and local governments into transportation infrastructure such as highways and new housing developments (such as Evergreen Park). Additionally, Downtown Downers Grove has seen an increase in nightlife activities thanks to increasing international tourism attraction from nearby Buffalo Niagara International Airport as well as overall growth across all aspects of suburban Chicago’s economy which can be traced back to Downtown DownersGrove’s role as anchor community
