Downers Grove is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 79,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The Village of Downers Grove was organized on December 5, 1871 from parts of Evanston and West View township. The first settlers to Downers Grove were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Connecticut. By 1850 they had reached what is now the village's north-central section. A post office was established at Downers Grove on November 15, 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. The first store opened at 182 Niles Road on December 2, 1861; it became known as the "Old Store" until 1906 when it moved to 9th Street and Glidden Avenue. The growth of trade and transportation led to an increase in population throughout the 19th century; by 1900 there were over 1,000 residents living in Downers Grove proper and its eastern suburbs. Trade advances during this time led to increased manufacturing activities which contributed significantly to economic development within Downers Grove over time: In 1908 a foundry was built at 7th and Glenwood streets; by 1924 a machine shop had been added along with other industrial enterprises; during World War II munitions production took center stage with factories located along Glenwood Avenue including one that constructed more than 100 tanks per day (the manufacture stopped immediately following Pearl Harbor). As farming transitioned into morernheavy industry during the 20th century there arose pressure for open space within Upstate Illinois; as a result much of downer grove's rural character has disappeared or been greatly changed since 1950s suburban expansion began: most recently major thoroughfares such as North Main Street have become commercial corridors while residential areas have seen significant redevelopment – most notably Highland Park east of Chicago Boulevard which saw mixed-use developments beginning around 1960s after being abandoned primarily for agricultural purposes One significant change that has occurred since then is an increasing trend towards high-density housing developments: Between 2000 and 2010 density levels increased by 50%, from 3 homes per square mile (1 per block) to 6 homes per square mile (3 per block). This dramatic increase has caused concerns about traffic congestion near schools but also threatens some of Downers Groves' older architecture which may not be able to accommodate current densities . nonetheless due largely to continued developers investment new properties are continuously being developed within downtown boundaries making up only 10% of total land area
