In 1925, Harry Lasker donated land to build the Home Savings and Loan Association (HSLA), one of the earliest lending institutions in Illinois which remains operational today as Oneida Savings Bank. In 1933, Alfred Pritzker founded Pritzker Prize Foundation which has given out more than 100 awards including 36 Pulitzer Prizes. On October 15, 2008 Mayor Richard Miech announced that he would not run for re-election due to health concerns; incumbent Rahm Emanuel won then-citywide election replacing Miech with 49% of the vote versus 46%. Emanuel served as mayor from 2006 through 2015 when he was elected presidentially to serve out his term until 2019. On December 12,[4] 2016 Barack Obama birthplace plaque was unveiled at University Park Historic District where he attended school between 1927 and 1929. In celebration of its centennial year on January 24th 2017,[5] Downers Grove hosted "Chicago's Centennial Celebration", event which showcased various aspects about life living in Chicago during those years such as arts and culture performances throughout downtown district.,[6] parade down Michigan Avenue,[7][8][9] food truck rally around Grant Park,[10][11][12][13][14], ice cream social at Roosevelt High School,[15] music performance from Local Haze Band at Navy Pier Shoreline Pavilion[16], fireworks display over Midtown skyline from Willis Tower[17],[18], open house for homebuilt shelter program called "Nate's Place"[19], street fair nicknamed "Grace Lane Mall" that took placeat North Side neighborhood.[20],[21],[22]

Downers Grove, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Downers Grove is named after John Downes, a British settler who arrived in 1809 and started to trade with the Potawatomi Indians. The village of Downers Grove was founded in 1837 by John and his wife Hannah Pringle Downes. In 1846, the village became an incorporated city under the name of Chicago; it adopted its present name in 1903. In 1847, American Surveyor Jacob Riis traveled through Cook County and found that many Indian tribes were living near Chicago without any means of supporting themselves. He proposed to Congress that America should give land to these tribes for their resettlement on friendly soil—a idea which won congressional approval and led to the founding of what is now downers grove into existence as a small town on November 6th,1847 - about three miles (4 km) from then known as "The Hub". The first white settlers in what would become downers grove were two brothers: Amos Lawrence and James Matson. They purchased two tracts of land from the Potawatomi Indians for $200 each on December 12th, 1849 – one mile (1 km) south-east of what is now downtown downers grove. The Lawrence brothers had come across maps dating back to 1789 which showed this area had been claimed by several nations including France, Spain and even Canada! James Matson took up farming there immediately while AmosLawrence built himself a gristmill within six months due to lack of water resources available elsewhere in central Illinois at that time! On May 3rd 1850 Amos Lawrence married Sarah Prentice – daughter of Captain Phineas Prentice who also owned land east of downtown where later City Hall would be located! This event marked not only the beginning but also endowment by America’s pioneer fathers for future generations hereabouts – forever grateful to be able call themselves “ descended from those sterling men” !!
In 1871, Onslow County was organized from part of Union County. In 1881, it became a part of the new Davenport County. On July 1, 1907, Davenport County was merged into the new Chicago metropolitan area and Onslow County became one of its five metropolitan counties.
