Dolton is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,023 at the 2010 census. Dolton is located on the east bank of the Kankakee River. It is northeast of Chicago and southwest of its namesake city, Dolton. The town was laid out as a stop on the first railway in Kane County, built by George Stephenson in 1846. At first it consisted only of single-family dwellings and stores; but soon other settlers began to arrive and build homes. In 1867 Dolton became the seat of Kane County after it was annexed by Chicago. After incorporation as a village in 1907, it again adopted its present name when incorporated as a city in 1912. Dolton's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; however, industry has also played an important role here over time. A cheese factory was built in 1930 and continues to operate today; while another textile mill closed down in the 1990s but has been reborn as a hotel/motel complex called "The Lodge". There are also several restaurants and bars located throughout the village; plus two golf courses - one open to all citizens for free play (the other offering membership privileges). Dolton's history can be traced back to 1846 when George Stephenson built the first railway through what is now Kane County from Chicago to Evanston (then known as Prairie du Chien) via Joliette Station on the Rock Island Railroad. At that time there were just three settlements in Kane County: Dolton, Palatine (now part of Aurora), and Batavia (now part of Peoria).
