Dolton, Illinois, is a small town located in the Will County region of Illinois. The population was 8,813 at the 2000 census. Dolton is home to the Dolton Astronomical Observatory which was established in 1892. The observatory is one of only a few astronomy facilities in the United States that are open to the public. The observatory also hosts a number of exhibits about astronomy and its history. The first astronomical observatory in Dolton was built on land acquired by John Hays from David Dixon in 1892. At that time, Dolton was an unincorporated community located within Will County. In 1897, ownership of the property changed hands again when Drs. George Folsom and Hiram Maxim donated their land to the town for use as an astronomical observatory. The first building on site were two wooden huts used for storage and showroom purposes until 1931 when a new structure was erected using fieldstone and mortar techniques designed by contractor Isaac Newton Williams Jr.. The new building housed three rooms with an Observatories Annex attached which served as a research workshop, library, classrooms and auditorium/theatre cum gymnasium with seating for up to 350 people; it remained operational until 1978 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by lightning during a storm。 In 1938, Drs. Leonard Pritchett and Clarence Laughlin donated four observing telescopes (two Kapp-like reflectors) along with associated equipment including eyepieces and mounts to support research into stellar photometry at short wavelengths by university students affiliated with Northwestern University underDr./Professors Edwin Hubble et al.; these telescopes remain operational today at Northwestern University’s Feinberg Astronomy Center (). A fifth telescope (the Schmidt Telescope) arrived in 1948 from Germany via American Scientist magazine’s “1948 Summer Awards for Short-wavelength Astrophysics” following donation by Dr./Professor Otto Struve., Director emeritus of Northern Arizona University's Observatory.). These five telescopes formed what is now known as North America's Very Large Telescope VISTA consortium (). In 1957 North America's VLT became operational; this telescope has since become one of Earth's most powerful instruments operating over all spectral bands (). Since 1992, Dolton has been home to North America's Great Synod of Bishops meeting annually on Sundays morning at Stations Church where they deliberate on ecclesiastical issues facing parishioners throughout North America including theological questions related to science fiction films being screened during lunchtime! There have been many notable speakers such as Archbishop Philip Gomez QC who spoke on climate change last year – making him one of just 25 people ever invited onto Canadian television! One major highlight came when permission was granted from then Pope Francis himself for planetarium shows highlighting different aspects of Christianity across galaxies! Dolton, Illinois was first settled in 1836 and became a town in 1849. It gained its current name of Dolton in 1865 when the railroad reached it. The first scopes were built here in 1838 by John Hogg and his son George, who also made the first telescope lens. In 1861, Isaac Newton bought land here and began to build what is now called the Newton Observatory. He also built a house on this property which still stands today. This was the site of America's first observatory and was used to study astronomy until 1923 when it was moved to Flagstaff Arizona because of air-pollution concerns.
Dolton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 986 at the 2010 census. Dolton is located on the east side of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. It is part of the Rockford–derived city of Rockford. Dolton has a post office and two churches - First Baptist and Southern Methodist - as well as a library and several businesses. There are also two high schools, Dolton West High School and Dolton East High School, both in Dolton. The community began to form around 1871 when John Auld (1821-1893) came to the area from Scotland with his family. He purchased 640 acres of land north of Joliet for $5 per acre ($50 total). Auld built three homes: one for himself and his family, another for his brother-in-law James Dutton (1827-1909), and still another for George Treadwell (1829-1911). In 1876, namesake Drury erected the first schoolhouse in what would become Dolton. That same year saw the founding of the First Baptist Church which served as both an educational institute and congregation until it closed its doors in 1958 due to financial difficulties. In 1889, Revolver Wm Hite organized a local Odd Fellows club which met at home evenings until 1896 when it moved into rented space on Washington Street near present day Park Road South. After meeting monthly at Reverend Hite's home from 1897 through 1907 there was enough political pressure brought about by Congressman John McCormack that First Baptist again reopened its doors in 1908 after spending over $1 million renovating their building! In 1911, Cotton Mather operated a gristmill on North Main Street that would remain operational until 1922 when it burned down due to overworking! The mill continued operating as anatta company store until 1951 before being torn down by developers!. In 1926, Drury erected what would be known as "The Brick House" which still stands today within sight of Park Road South! Mrs. Fenton donated her six bedroom brick house next door to The Brick House so that this structure could serve as both her home residence during her lifetime; however she never lived inside it because she became ill! Mrs’t died suddenly while receiving treatment at Northwestern Hospital early in 1928 while living upstairs!!! In 1937 construction started on what would become "Drury Field" or just "The Farm". This 3/4 acre tract consisted of farm buildings including a barn/cattle barn(now converted into apartments), four oxen pens(now apartments), three plow fields(currently used for parking lots), water tower(renovated & now used for storage purposes), grain silo(now apartment complex/gas station), blacksmith shop(current restaurant)& feedlot(renovated?). When completed it contained 4 tennis courts (& 2 trackways leading thereto!), 2 swimming pools (one large & one small) !! Today only 1 tennis court remains from original buildout!!!!!!!! Also remaining from original buildout are 3 privy areas (2 main & 1 reverse)!!!! One wall remaining from original buildout is Original Drury well which measures 25 feet long by 8 feet wide & 7 feet deep !! Now housing office property!!
