Dolton was founded in 1836 by John Dolton and his sons, James and Joseph. In 1837, the Dolton family moved to a new home on the corner of State and Main Streets. The Doltons were among the first settlers in what is today Dolton Township. For many years, they farmed land in the township. They also built a log cabin that still stands today. In 1851, John Dolton died and was buried in the Dolton Cemetery. His wife, Martha (née Pettit), continued to live in the house on Main Street until her death in 1922. The Pettits’ four children – James,Josephine (1871-1957), Everett (1879-1965) and Irvin (1881-1966) – all grew up at home and attended school within blocks of where their parents lived. Everett was mayor of Joliet from 1945 to 1949; he is also known as an author and educational administrator for Joliet Unified School Districts.
