Dolton is a small town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,553 at the 2010 census. Dolton is located on Illinois Route 38 and is bordered by the towns of Hampshire and Clinton to the east, Carbondale to the south, and McDonough to the west. The township was organized in 1847 from parts of Carbondale Township. Its first settler was Moses Chapman. The present-day township was laid out in 1851 when it included land that had been part of Hampshire Township. It became a part of Macon County in 1877. In 1907 its post office became Doltonen after its name change from Hantsboro to Macon County. According to the 2010 census, Dolton has a total area of , all land.

Dolton, Illinois was a small town in the south central portion of the United States until the early 20th century. It is now a ghost town and census-designated place. Dolton's history began with pioneer settlers, who arrived in 1824. The community was founded on what is now the east side of town. By 1830, there were only five families living in Dolton. The first school was built in 1836 and remained in use until 1954. Dolton experienced significant growth during its early years as a village; by 1850, it had a population of 350 people. However, by 1865, when the federally funded Indian Removal Act led to the displacement of most Native Americans from Illinois, Dolton's population had decreased to just 15 people. In 1877, pioneer George Wahl made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a mill at Dolton; he later sold his interest in the business to John Crouch who operated it for two decades before it closed down due to financial difficulties. The demise of this small community may have been due partially to advances in transportation which allowed residents easier access to larger towns and cities but also because many residents left for better opportunities closer to city life or outside of America altogether during this time period. Additionally, Chauncey Mapes established himself as one of America's leading grain merchants after arriving from Great Britain in 1851 and setting up his own mill at Joliette Street near present day Western Avenue and Clinton Street close to where Joliette Boulevard runs parallel nearby today). Mapes' business would eventually contribute significantly (and controversially) towards helping contribute financially towards American independence from Great Britain through its exports alone although some historians argue that he did not actually provide economic assistance directly nor toes any political sidelines associated with independence such as tariffs or land purchases requisite for such activity). In 1922–1923 several businesses including hardware store (owned by Rufus Howe) post office (owned by Gertrude Faust), blacksmith shop (owned by Abel Stroud), grocery store (operated by Wm Haddon & Bros.), dance hall (the Cotton Club), garage (later renamed "Wahl’s Hardware"), movie theater and numerous other businesses all closed their doors simultaneously due primarily to hard times stemming from World War I which had devastated much rural America across Midwest economies including Duluth/Blue Earth County specifically (). Many residents relocated out into larger cities or towns throughout Illinois during this time period while others found new opportunities within agriculture or manufacturing most notably Ford Motor Company president Henry Ford Sr.'s family-owned factory located on Dearborn Street just north of downtown Chicago - home base for Ford Motors operations operation stretching back over 100 years
