Dolton, Illinois was first settled in 1836 by John Dolton and his family. The town was named after General David Dixon who fought in the War of 1812. The first guns used in the area were shotguns made from deer or rabbit skin. In 1851, gunsmiths in Dolton started to make revolvers and pistols out of wood. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in Dolton with about 120 employees. The industry peaked around 1900 with production reaching 2 million pistols a year. On November 8, 1820, Ohioan General Anthony Wayne and his army attacked Indiana City and captured over two hundred prisoners. This event is considered to be the beginning of the American Civil War. In 1825, James K. Polk became president of the United States and issued a proclamation ordering all Indian nations east of Lake Michigan to cede their lands to America. The order caused great anger among many Native Americans who felt that they had been violated by America. Nearly two thousand people- mostly Indians- were killed as a result of this proclamation. In 1846, when Abraham Lincoln became president, he ordered federal troops into Illinois to quash any prospect of statehood for Iowa and other southern states which were still being threatened by Britain during the "Quarterly Review" period (1845-1849). Many in Chicago saw this as an opportunity for business partners such as themselves to gain control over some of what they felt was British influence in central Illinois. The military presence also led to increased crime rates in Dolton because criminals could more easily steal goods or use violence against innocent civilians without fear of punishment from law enforcement authorities
