Dolton, Illinois is a small town located in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Dolton has a rich history that goes back to 1831 when it was founded as a post office with the name of "Dolton West". In 1851, the town became part of Macon County and was renamed "Dolton". The first gun target in Dolton was erected in 1864 by George L. Stephenson and Sons. A rifle range and muzzleloader shooting Contest were held annually until 1972. In 1976-1977 the first Shotgun Skeet Tournament took place here and since then the event has grown into one of the largest skeet tournaments in America taking place annually in late summer or early fall. The town's Arsenal Museum is dedicated to preserving local history with exhibits on firearms from Dolton's past including bows, arrows and cannons dating back to 1795 when Dolton began trading goods with Springfield, Illinois.

With its location near Lake Michigan and other water resources, agriculture has been important here since early times; today's crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, limestone dusts (which are used to make plaster), applesauce (from wild Appleseed plants), pork bellies (from hog feedlots) and roses.
