Dolton is located about 38 miles (61 km) south of Chicago and 28 miles (45 km) north of the county seat, Rockford. The first settler in Dolton was John Wacker who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the site of present day Dolton High School. Other early settlers included James Slattery and his family who came in 1838; David Swartzwelder who arrived in 1840; Michael Pugh and his family who arrived in 1844; and Isaac Troup who arrived in 1846. Dolton post office was established on July 10,1856, by order of Gov. Adm Benjamin Harrison. The name change to its current form – Dolton after Ulysses S Grant's visit to the area on October 16,1868 The first store opened near what is now the high school campus in 1865 by Jno Pugh Jr., son of Michael Pugh. In 1870, George Abert opened a general store which still stands today on Main Street near Ford Road Elementary School (). It became one of the most important businesses operationally for Dolton until it closed down around 1980 due to lack of business interest afterlarge suburban development took over most of the village center area

The community was founded on the east side of the town line between Cook and McLean Counties. It became a village in 1926. The first school in Dolton opened in 1820 and was called "School House No. 5". In 1829, the first post office opened in Dolton and was called "Fountain View". In 1830, two men named James Mclntyre and Isaac Beardsley built a cabin near the intersection of Main Street and West Road (now State Highway 3) to provide food for their animals during wintertime. They made a business out of trading goods with other settlers along this road. In 1836, three men from Jersey City named Edward Prince purchased land north of present-day Dolton on what is now Woodlawn Drive. They name their new land "Prince's Prairie", after Prince's father who had died young when he was young. In 1850, there were only nine residents living in Dolton; all were farmers or fishermen who traded goods with nearby villages ortowns for provisions during the winter months. By 1860, there were 413 people living in Dolton; it had become an incorporated village with its own government by that time. In 1912, one of America's earliest radio stations began operations from a Douglas Aircraft hangar located adjacent to Parkview Elementary School which served as both transmitter site and studios for programming including shortwave broadcasts from Europe via short wave station WDAN (1090 kHz).
