Dolton is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,689 at the 2010 census. Dolton is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is a major stop on the I-80 corridor. It lies east of Chicago's Loop and north of Downers Grove. The town was founded in 1837 by General William Tecumseh Sherman and his family as a landing for goods brought overland from Indiana by General Harrison's army during the Northwest Indian War. (It was then spelled "Tecumseh"). Sherman renamed it after his home state of Michigan, which he had seen during the war. Sherman built a log cabin here that still stands today. The first store in Dolton opened on December 12, 1838. It was known as the Post Office Store because it served as an official post office until October 1, 1846 when Joliet became the new postal capital; Dolton remained an unincorporated community until 1856 when it became part of Kane County under its present name. Dolton saw some heavy fighting in the American Civil War; three cannons were found here after Union forces burned down one house here in 1863 during their retreat from Atlanta following Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.. In 1865, Confederate Major General James Longstreet spent time here before crossing into Georgia to join Robert Eason's Union army invading North Carolina; Longstreet's unit also looted many homes here before withdrawing back to Jacksonville, Alabama later that year.Kane County Historian H C Schaefer After Reconstruction ended in America in 1877, most businesses closed or moved away due to lack of patronage or competition from larger towns nearby such as Joliet or Aurora IL. Many residents followed William McKinney into politics while others returned to farming . Today there are few reminders that life ever happened outside of those early days...the only evidence you'll find are our pioneer cemetery sites which have been replaced by recent development."
