On July 8th 1870 Immigrant James Beattie landed at Pier point on the Illinois side of the Great Lakes with 11 passengers including four children: James Beattie Sr., John Beattie Jr., Annie Beattie & twins Willie & Catherine Beattie. This was only one successful landing per day during that summer but it represented hope for many immigrants seeking passage to new land. The group continued their journey westward along Lake Michigan until they reached Steubenville Ohio where they boarded the Illiniense packet ship "Maria" for New York City on September 2nd 1870. Many immigrants disembarked here such as Justus Swartzentruber who became co-owner of said business with William Barnes also arriving soon after. Eventually everyone living near or aboard the illinois packet ship found themselves regulation U S territory by May 14th 1871 when President Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order 9258 which made all individuals within territorial limits subject to military service without any right to refund or change their enlistment terms should they choose not to serve without pay. Joliette was specifically mentioned within this order as being within Indiana so many residents chose to head there instead likely anticipating less stringent Military Service Regulations governingnonincorporated areas adjacent to Indiana Territory which bordered Illinois Territory at that time including what is now Peoria County . By 1860, there were three schools in Dolton- one for boys and two for girls- both attended by students from surrounding villages as well as students from nearby towns such as East Stroudsburg, West Stroudsburg, Lancaster and Middletown which all sent their children to attend local public schools while also attending services at the Methodist church on Sundays mornings.
