Dolton is a small town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Dolton is located just south of the state line and east of Macon. The first settler in Dolton was Jonas Bogan in 1813. A post office called Dolton was established in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1886. The first school for children in Dolton was built on the corner of Green and Elm Streets by Phebe Winker in 1868. It served as a day-school until 1915. In 1916, Dr. Mosely Cramer established what is now known as the Methodist Episcopal Church here; he had been born near Decatur, Illinois and moved to Macon County when he was eighteen years old to help found this church there. Dolton became a municipality on December 15, 1935 via an act of the General Assembly of Illinois; its boundaries were changed from rural to urban land within two years afterward due to population growth (the original township had only 771 residents). At that time it contained 592 people Dolan's Ford Museum features a variety of American Civil War artifacts from both Union and Confederate forces, including cannonballs and ammunition boxes
