Dixon, Illinois is a small town in the southern Great Lakes region of the United States. The population was 1,151 at the 2010 census. Dixon is located in Macomb County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Uniontown on the east, Arlington Heights on the north, Lombard on the west, and Park Ridge on the south. The history of Dixon goes back to 1837 when a group of settlers led by John Dixon set out from London for what would be their new home in what is now Dixon. They named their new town after General David Dixon who had fought in Mexico under Mexican President Santa Anna during that country's revolution against Spanish rule. The first store in Dixon opened its doors in 1838 and soon became an important center for trade within Macomb County. By 1850, there were twelve stores and three blacksmiths operating in town. In 1860, General George Armstrong Custer arrived with his cavalry unit at Fort Dearborn and decided to spend winter near Dixon while his troops were being trained nearby at Camp Dickerson. During World War II, General MacArthur's Eighth Army passed through Dixon en route to invade Japan and it was here that many of Duffey's (Dixon's) boys got their first taste of combat; including future Ulysses S Grant who enlisted as a Private First Class just days before he graduated from high school! At 9:00 am on December 8th 1945 American forces liberated Tokyo from Japanese occupation - an event which has been cited as one of America’s most successful military campaigns since World War II! After V-E Day (Victory over Enemy), soldiers from both sides paraded through downtown Dixon along Michigan Avenue where they disbanded into groups according to rank - more than 50 years later this parade still takes place each year! The post-war boom sawpopulations swell as businesses developed around transportation links such as I-75/I-94 (now MILWAUKEE Freeway), Interstate 10 (now US 31), State Road 24A/24B (now MICHIGAN AVE.), Ford Motor Company sales locations across Macomb County, agricultural production with expanding corn cribs dotting rural areas throughout northern Illinois following WORLD WAR II policies enacted by Franklin D Roosevelt; some 5500 families residing within 30 miles of Chicago via FM radio broadcastswaves!!!
