Dixon, Illinois is a town in Dixon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. Dixon was platted in 1856 and named after John Dixon, a settler. In 1860, the town had a population of 711. By 1870, it had grown to 1,014. It continued to grow until 1906 when its population peaked at 1,924 and declined to 914 by 1910.residential buildings were built during the post- World War II boom years in which Dixon became one of the most populous towns in central Illinois In 1865 John Ahern started a small grocery store on Main Street near present day State Street. In 1869 Ahern married Julia Treadwell who lived across the street from him on Second Avenue. They started raising chickens and pigs and soon enough they had 3 stores supplying all of Dixon with fresh produce including eggs that could be sold within 2 miles of their farmhouse! Their first house was built on the corner of Main and First Streets in 1871 which they named "The Gables."They would continue to operate their business until their death in 1962 (John Ahern's 95th birthday) when their son took over operations Dixon also saw an influx of people during this time as people migrated from rural areas closer to Chicago into what is now Dixon town limits due to changes taking place with railroads coming through central Illinois beginning with the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad in1865 . These new arrivals brought many tools and machines with them as well as ideas for manufacturing businesses such as flour mills which quickly sprang up around downtown Dixon During this time John Addison opened his own general store next dooron Third Avenuein 1879 giving residents even more local shopping options This growth led to increased competition among merchants so much so that some began limiting sales hours or moving out altogether butchers continued providing quality meat products at affordable prices for residents throughout these times
