Dixon, IL was founded in 1871 by John S. Dixon as a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River. The village had a population of only 200 people when it was founded and grew rapidly during the early years of its existence. By 1907, Dixon had grown to an incorporated city with a population of over 10,000 people. In that year, John S. Dixon passed away and his wife, Jennie, took control of the business enterprises in their name.Jennie Dixon continued to run the businesses until her death in 1951. After Jennie's death, John S. Dixon's grandson, Harold Wesson Dixon Jr., assumed control of the businesses and ran them for many years until he died in 1984. During Harold Wesson Dixon Jr.'s ownership, the businesses became known as "The Dixons". The first target shooters in Dixon were men who used shooting galleries set up along local riverside trails to hold targets close at hand for practice or competition purposes. These shooting galleries quickly became popular among local hunters who used them to try different hunting techniques and strategies while also enjoying some good old fashioned target practice! It wasn't until after World War II that women began to participate actively in target Shooting through groups formed specifically for this purpose such as “Women’s Target Shooting Association” (WATA) which was organized by Mrs Ethel Watts-Bennett in 1948 with other similar organizations soon thereafter followed suit throughout Illinois! At present day there are active Women's Target Shooting Associations all across America including those located in Dixon! One of our favorite things abouttarget shooting is that it can provide us with opportunities to improve our marksmanship skills not only from a personal standpoint but also from an organizational standpoint! It gives us something we can all share together and make some great memories doing so!

By 1860, Dixonville had a population of about 150 people and two stores.
