Dixon, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Dixon is known for its apple orchards and cheese factory. Dixon was platted in 1853 by John Dixon, a member of the General Assembly from Sangamon County. The present-day town was founded on July 4, 1873 by Johnnie Wickersham and his family after they lost their land holdings in a land lottery authorized by then-Governor James K. Polk to reward settlers who had submitted offers of $5 per acre (2¢ per mile). The first post office was established in Dixon on October 20, 1875. In 1903 the name was changed to honor President Grover Cleveland and it has been unchanged since then save for one change which took place on November 6, 1934 when it became known as "Dixon Township." The town also has a professional football team that currently plays in the Illinois National Football League (NFL).
Dixon was founded in 1847 by John Dixon and his wife, Anna. The town became a post office in 1853, and a village in 1865. Dixon was incorporated as a city in 1903. In 1948, the city of Dixon merged with the neighboring town of Rockford to form the current city of Chicago.
