In Dixon, Illinois in 1881, a group of men decided to start an optical store. They named the business "Dixon Optical." For many years, Dixon Optical was one of the leading dealers in optic equipment and supplies. In 1937, the company moved its entire operations to a new building on North First Street in Dixon. The old building still stands today and is used as a storage facility for the company's materials. In 1951, Dixon Optical merged with two other businesses to become "Optic-A-Gogo". Over the years, Optic-A-Gogo has continued to be one of the most important optical merchants in the United States. Dixon was a town in Dixon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Dixon was John Dixon who arrived in 1819. Dixon post office opened in 1821 and remained open until 1840. In 1830, James Wirtz founded the town of West Dundee on the north side of the Chicago River just east of what is now Dixon. On July 4th, 1830, Wirtz donated 640 acres (250 hectares) to form the new town of Dixon as a gift from his father-in-law Amos Worthington. Dixon soon became one of Illinois' most populous towns with over 10,000 residents by 1840. The community had several brick buildings erected for its government and school system including a courthouse and jail which were completed in 1841. The first steamboat ever built in Illinois operated out of Dixonport during this time and helped to make Dixon one of the leading shipping ports on the Great Lakes region
Dixon was founded in 1839 by John Dixon and his wife Martha. It is the oldest cemetery in Dixon Township, Illinois. The first settlers were white men who arrived from Kentucky. A post office was established at Dixon in 1840, and the town was incorporated on November 6, 1851.
