Dixon, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 1,451 at the 2000 census and 1,811 at the 2010 census. Dixon is located in Kane County. The area now known as Dixon was first settled by Sauk Indians in the 17th century. Dixon was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1853. The first settler in what is now Dixon was George Washington Dixon, who arrived there in 1827 and came later to become one of the pioneers of east-central Illinois. George Washington Dixon had three sons: James Broun (1795-1861), John McFadden (1829-1901), and Isaac Newton Bowman (1837-1925). All three men served in Company K, 7th Regiment United States Infantry during the American Civil War 1861-1865. James Broun was killed at Pea Ridge while leading his company into battle on April 6teenth, 1865; John McFadden became captain of Company K and led it to victory at Chickamauga; and Isaac Newton Bowman went missing during action near Chattanooga on September 15th but was later found dead from wounds received two days later at Lookout Mountain near Missionary Ridge. In 1850s and 1860s many families moved to eastern Illinois due to economic opportunities opened up by railways coming through that region. By 1870 all but one family living in present day Dixon had come from eastern Illinois or nearby states such as Indiana or Ohio. In 1880 Scott’s store alone sold more goods than any other store in central Kane County outside Chicago! In 1875 an entire block across from Scott’s store were built post offices – this block would become known as Main Street today! In 1896 residents voted to incorporate their town with a land value of $8000 per capita – this amount has not been surpassed since! On February 14th 1899 Mayor Jens Petersen walkedpath through downtown Dixon for the first time ever when he accepted incorporation papers from citizens hand held high! The following year saw major construction projects begin including new schools/libraries/theater complex/civic center & two churches – these projects continued until 1959 when all except for one were completed!!!! This growth spurt helped spur job creation throughout much of central Kane County&made possible by advances in transportation which made life easier for farmers both northward&southward
