He was a signer of the United States Constitution and a general during the American Civil War. In 1865, he became military governor of Iowa after General Ulysses S. Grant left that role to become president of the United States. After his term ended in 1867, he moved to Dixon and died there four years later.

Dixon, Illinois was founded in 1836 by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Dixon. The town was named for General James Dixon, who had been instrumental in the successful struggle against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Dixon quickly became a center of industry and commerce within the area. In 1868, Dixon was incorporation as a village under the name of Elmira. In 1902, Elmira merged with nearby Clearwater to form Dixon Township. The township has since become an incorporated city. The town of Dixon is located on the north side of Cook County within Illinois’s Upper Peninsula region. The town is bordered by Winnebago County to the west, Johnson County to the east, and Kane County to the south. According to 2010 census data, Dixon has a total population of 4300 residents. The majority of residents are White (92%), while Black (3%) and Asian (1%) make up 2% of the population. As an incorporated city, Dixon enjoy many privileges not afforded to townships or villages in Illinois law. These privileges include having its own police department (the only one in Cook County), being able to levy its own taxes without approval from neighboring municipalities, and being able to establish its own zoning regulations without prior consent from other cities or towns in that area. Today, downtown Dixon remains an important cultural and commercial center for both rural and urban residents throughout southeast Cook County. A variety of local businesses operate within walking distance from most homes throughout town including small grocery stores, butcher shops/laundries, hardware stores/feed yards etc.. Additionally there are numerous restaurants serving all types of cuisine as well as several movie theaters located within easy walking distance should you wish to attend any events taking place in town such as county fairs etc...most importantly however downtown continues serve as a vibrant community hub where people can come together for business meetings hearings court appearances funerals etc... this makes it perfect for busy families with children who want plenty of activities close at hand while living close enough so they don't have too much trouble getting around
Dixon was a small town in Suburban Illinois, located about 20 miles east of Chicago. The population of Dixon was about 2,000 at the time of its incorporation as a township on July 1, 1872. On December 3, 1893, Dixon became a city by annexing the neighboring townships of Addison and Lockhart.
