Dixon, Illinois is a small town in the southern part of the state of Illinois. It is bordered by Kankakee County to the north, McHenry County to the east, and Cook County to the south. The population was 7,838 at the 2000 census. Dixon is located on Illinois Route 12, which leads from I-88 in Chicago to Dixonville in McHenry County. The Town of Dixon was first organized on November 3, 1833 when a group of citizens from other villages near Dixon formed a Township Committee under the leadership of Captain James Dickson. On December 5th, 1834, a plat for an incorporated village was filed with Sangamon County Circuit Court and named "Dixon". The Village Board took up membership applications for their new village until July 29th 1830 when they decided against incorporation because it would have been too difficult to get enough land. However on October 10th 1830 John Haines started construction of what is now known as Main Street in what would become Dixon. On January 1st 1840 three men - William Ladd, Samuel Parsons and Ebenezer Sprague - founded a grist mill on present day West Main Street in what became known as Grinnell Avenue. On February 20th 1840 Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from Grinnell Avenue which were Recorded and Published at that time as follows: "In compliance with your request I will deliver my remarks upon some important topics connected with our country during this season; but before doing so I must remind you that I reside within these walls". A plaque still exists today commemorating this event along with other important moments in history such as when Dixon's first post office opened on May 4th 1847 or when LED lightbulbs replaced gas lamps in 1955. By 1860 there were over fifty stores and businesses including four banks and six grocery stores operating out of Grinnell Avenue alone! When Union troops arrived following the American Civil War they found much needed goods such as flour and lumber being transported back home across county lines! This led to increased business activity for Grinnell Avenue businesses who soon began calling themselves "The Gridiron Gang" because of their participation in transportation efforts! In 1870 sawing machines began being purchased by local businessmen so that they could provide more efficient service throughout the community! By 1916 there were only five businesses remaining originalGrinnell Ave., two groceries (Granada Store #1and 2), one post office (Dixon Post Office), one garage (later converted into apartments) and one barbershop left functioning out of main Grinnell Ave.. However by 1925 all but one business had closed except Granada Store #2 which continued serving food until it burned down in 1985 leaving behind many memories for those who frequented its doors over the years! Today only two buildings remain standing on Grinnell Ave...one currently used for housing ( apartment building )and another used as an elementary school office complex called 'Moses'. Moses Elementary School opened its doors September 15th 1954 after being built using money donated by local citizens! From kindergarten thru 8th grade students attend Moses while 9-12 students attend Rockford High School which has its own gymnasium/auditorium/3 tennis courts & 1 football field). Today Moses offers earth science classes through extracurricular programs like ISLAMOVEPATH® ; music classes through band & choir; math classes through STEAMWORKS ® ; social studies through AMERICAN EAST® ; Spanish classes THROUGHOUT THE YEARS; health education THROUGHOUT THE YEARS; technology class thru DESIGN TOGETHER ® .

Dixon was a small community in southern Illinois, located about twenty miles west of Carbondale. The town was founded by David Dixon in 1836 and named for him. Dixon was an early settler on the central Illinois River, and his mill operated until 1868. In 1847, Dixon donated land to Carbondale for a public square, which is now home to the Carbondale Public Library. Dixon also donated money to build the first school in Carbondale. Dixon had two churches and several homes used as religious institutions during its time as a community. The first church built in Dixon was Protestant and served as the town's center from its establishment until 1853. It later became known as the Methodist Church of Carbondale. The second church built in Dixon was Presbyterian and served as the town's central meeting house from its establishment until 1865. It later became known as First Congregationalist United Church of Christ (now St John's Episcopal). In 1865, when Carbondale consolidated with other towns in southern Illinois, Dixon merged with them to form Carbondale-Dixon Township. After this merger, both Davisons lived here into their nineties years before moving away permanently after their final death in 1998.
