At that time there was no organized militia in the area and citizens used whatever weapons they could find to defend themselves from Indian attack. One of the earliest gunsmiths in Dixon was Elias Howe who developed a system for making guns using cast iron instead of wood. In 1841, he started production of cannonballs for use by the United States Army. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln signed the Ulysses S. Grant General Order No. 11 which authorized the procurement of large quantities of ammunition for military purposes throughout all Union countries. This order led to increased production at Howe’s shop and eventually led to his retirement in 1875. From then until World War II, ammunition production took place at two other shops located in Dixon- one by J.B McDonnell and another by George Wienand Sons (now Norma). In 1907, Dixon merged with neighboring Arlington to form Arlington Heights as one community. The merger resulted in the acquisition of many businesses including The Star newspaper and four churches: St Alban's Episcopal Church (founded 1865), First Presbyterian Church (founded 1870), Baptist church (founded 1892) and Congregational church (founded 1901). The population of Dixon peaked at 2,903 during the 1930 census but gradually declined over subsequent decades due to numerous changes such as migration away from agriculture to other jobs opportunities or annexation by neighboring towns such as Arlington Heights or Wheaton IL - both of which had larger populations than Dixon at that time. However, because of its close proximity to other municipalities and large housing developments such as Park Ridge IL – home to Chicago’s most important shopping district – Dixon remains an important community today with approximately 2,000 residents living within its limits
Dixon was founded in 1824 by Col. Isaac Dixon, a Revolutionary War general and congressman from Illinois. The town grew around the Dixon Land Company, a group of speculators who bought land in present-day Dixon for $1 per acre. In 1834, the company sold the land to a group of citizens led by Daniel Quinn. Quinn renamed the town after himself, and it continued to grow until 1963 when it merged with nearby Elmhurst.
