Dixon, Illinois is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census and 1,585 at the 2010 census. Dixon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It has a humid subtropical climate that experiences temperatures from the mid-20s to low 30s during summers and cool winters which lows around 0 degrees Celsius. Dixon's economy revolves around agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. The community has a school system with over fifty schools and twenty-one libraries across three campuses. The first settler in Dixon was John Crouch who arrived in 1827 when he founded the village of East Prairie on land he had bought from Nicholas Laclede. He named it after his friend James Dixon who had come to live in this area two years earlier. In 1829 John Crouch married Anna Maria Goodspeed and they erected a log cabin on what is now known as Goodwin Road near present day Dixon High School. They raised crops and cattle until 1840 when they lost their land due to Indian warfare and moved again to purchase more land near where they now stand on Happy Valley Road just east of US Highway 31 (now Northwestern Indiana Interstate). In 1845 John Crouch built the first post office in Dixon which served him and his family for six months before being closed by Confederate General Joseph Eudycome because he did not support slavery even though he lived within Union lines at the time. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford County, Missouri so much interest centered around this event throughout Illinois that local newspapers announced plans for a public celebration including rides on horseback through various parts of the state including Dixon where offerings were made for Lincoln's bodyguard Sergeant William Tolan who died duringthe attack while later buried at Elmwood Cemetery outside of town limits adjacent to current day Hiwassee Elementary School which shares its name with one of Lincoln's descendants

This would become one of the most important propertiesowned by Griggs Industries throughout its history. In addition to its motel empire, Griggs also developed several other manufacturing enterprises including Chevrolet (1948), Ford (1953), Hershey Chocolate (1970) and JBL Acoustic guitars (1982). Today,Griggs remains one of Macon County's largest employers with over 2,000 employees headquartered within its sprawling industrial park across from downtown Dixon

The first post office in town was established in 1849. By 1865 Dixon had a population of 1,500 and it became a village on July 15, 1870. On November 4, 1870 Dixon was incorporated as a city.
