Des Plaines, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Des Plaines" comes from an Indian word meaning "plain." The first European to visit what is now Des Plaines was Captain John Smith in 1679. He found a village of about fifty people and named it after his home parish in Hampshire, England. In 1812 the Township of Des Plaines was organized and laid out by General James K. Polk. By 1860 its population had grown to 2,500 residents and it became a city on December 3rd, 1868 with a vote by the people followed by annexation by Chicago on January 1st of that year The river that forms much of Des Plaines' eastern border is named for George Washington as were some streets in town: First Street (now Roosevelt Road), Second Street (now Howard Avenue), Third Street (now Ashland Avenue), Fourth Street (now Prairie View Drive). One reason this small town got its start as a farming community may have been because there were no other places near enough to get water supply or irrigation services from the large rivers aroundChicago when they were formed intoagos in 1847-48 duringPresident James Kahl's Executive Order No. 9335/1849 which created ' Drainage Districts '. This order provided for '(1) creation of new townships within Cook County; (2) establishment thereinof of judicial districts composed principally thereof; and (3) regulation hereafter made respecting Lots and Water Rights.' In 1840 two farmers – Nathan Putnam and Jesse Wirtz – started building what would become known as the Town House on Milwaukee Avenue just east of present day State University Place which served as their headquarters until about 1870 when they moved to 4226 Niles Ave., now called North Side High School
Des Plaines was founded in 1847 by Revolutionary War veteran John George White. The village name honors General Washington and his aide-de-camp, General James Wilkinson. White's farmstead is still located in the village.
