The history of shooting target holders in Des Plaines, Illinois can be traced back to at least 1892. On that date, a man named James Beattie erected the first shooting target holder in the community. At that time, Des Plaines was a small town located in the central area of Illinois. The business proprietor, James Beattie, used his targets to shoot at game near his home. As word spread about this unusual activity and people began to visit him for shooting practice, more and more people added their names to the list of customers. In 1916, J.P. O’Brien became the owner of Beattie’s Shooting Gallery and started selling target holders throughout Des Plaines. He continued to sell these devices until 1947 when he sold all his assets to Harry Hickey. At that time, Harry Hickey operated Beattie’s Shooting Gallery until it closed down in 1984. Since then, there have been several individuals who have purchased and operated the old building where Harry Hickey operated Beattie’s Shooting Gallery from 1984-2001. These individuals include John Dehner (2002-2006), Donny Ziegler (2007-2011), Tim Sauer (2012-present) and Mike Sauer (2017-present). During these years, they have successfully preserved and restored this important part of local history by hosting summer festivals onsite as well as reproducing classic artifacts fromBeattie’s Shooting Gallery onsite during events such as photo shoots or family reunions. Today, there is a renewed focus on preserving this important aspect of local history because it has become an iconic part of Des Plaines culture and identity! This year alone we have seen numerous initiatives taken by locals including a mural project which celebrates 100 years of manufacturing in Des Plaines; a new park designed specifically for children called Playland; and even an official recognition from the city government for being one of “America's 10 Most Diverse Cities”! All these projects are manifestations of how we view our community through its History lens - cherishing what makes us special while also standing up for what is right & wrong within our community & nation...the traditional values that keep us together!

Polk sent troops into Illinois during the Mexican-American War to quell violence among Native American tribes and pillage their villages; when they returned home they discovered that much property had been taken from them without their consent or compensation. Polk ordered Ulysses S. Grant to cross the state line into Mexico and search for any stolen goods while he was away; when Grant found clues leading him to desplaines he decided against prosecuting anyone and instead burned all evidence
