Des Plaines is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Des Plaines were French immigrants who arrived in 1774. They named their new town after the plain near Paris where they had been living. The original village was located on the east side of present-day Des Plaines Avenue and only had a few houses. In 1834, the village became an incorporated community with a meeting house and three stores. The first post office was established in 1835 and handled mail for both Des Plaines Village and Park Ridge to the south. In 1836, four men from Streator founded what would become Joliet Township on land that lay between present-day Cook County and Lake Michigan. When Joliet Township was organized, it consisted of just over one-third of Des Plaines Township which totaled just under 20 square miles (50 km2). That same year saw another important development when Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd Lincoln in a private ceremony at Mount Auburn Cemetery outside of Springfield, IL. Mrs Lincoln's father had died two years earlier while she was still living at home with her mother; thus she became presidentially eligible for election as well as becoming one of Illinois' first women citizens by virtue of her eligibility (she also served on several state boards). The population growth across Cook County during this time period can be appreciated when looking at Census data prepared by various organizations such as the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) which has publishedofficial estimates dating back to 1850 displaying rates for different populous areas throughout America such as “the Metropolitan Statistical Areas” or MSA’s which are defined cities/towns with a million or more residents according to Census data released every 10 years). As found in Table 1 below: Des Plaines went from having 2 inhabitants per mile² in 1830 to 11 inhabitants per mile² by 1840; and then 12 inhabitants per mile² by 1850 due primarily to waves of Irish immigrants arriving during this time period who were required to take up offers for land available within Cook County limits should they choose not to remain permanently upon arrival thereby doubling farm acreage within minutes from their initial settlement attempts! This rapid growth could be partially attributed to John Quinn’s efforts as President pro tempore (he later served as speaker)during the era when all public works projects were managed through his department including road construction &maintenance etcetera...Des Plaines quickly became known as “the lucky town”due largely to its location relativeto major centers like Chicago & other eastern cities during this time frame resultingin little competition for jobs / tax revenue generatedfrom burgeoning businesses/residential subdivisions existing adjacentTo&within walking distanceOf main commercial districts! After Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration on April 4th 1865 following his successful run for Vice President against Andrew Johnson on November 3rd 1865 many residents felt confident that things would finally change under his leadership & startedto optimism level given recent history (& political landscape)of good government performanceby previous administrations! Unfortunately however this upbeat mood soon changedwhen news reached town about Confederate forces raidimg nearby small townskilling many people & capturing some horses causing muchpanic among local farmers who did not want their crops raided!Lincoln quickly respondedproviding troops reinforcements & ordering 500 roundsof artilleryballs fired into positionjust west OF DES PLAINES Ave...This event ledto increased tensions between local militia forces(which included alot Of young men newly enlisted&relieved from duty IN THE CIVIL WAR!)&Confederate sympathizerswho began raiding des plaines again!! subsequent Raiding eventsbecame so concerning TO some Desplainesiansthat they formed a secret society called “The Sons Of Liberty” basedon contemporary American Revolutionary War newspaper articles describing similar raids happeningnear Philadelphia!!! Aftermathof those raids numerous farmers formed militias themselves comprisedmostly OF ANTIWARRIER MEMBERSHIP!!!This group eventually morphed into THE DES PLAINES MILITIA FOUNDATION WHICH SUPPORTED LEMON JONES FOR PRESIDENT IN 2008
