The older settlers here helped build Ford Heights and developed their own businesses which continued until about 1910 when automobiles made travel much easier and more affordable than ever before; thus ending many of those early pioneer days in Des Plaines! On December 1st, 1847 the first school was opened in what is now known as Old Town (now part of Downtown Des Plaines) by Mrs. Catherine Hickey Smith along with five other teachers including Mrs Middleton who taught there until 1865 when she moved to Rockford to open her own school there! Thisaugust 12th saw also becoming home to First Congregational Church which was organized December 6th 1830 by Reverend Amos Barton (1799-1868). Reverend Barton felt since all citizens needed religious services “at least once a month” they should have their church located close so people could attend without having to go far away! The first permanent residents east of the river came in 1860 when Drs George Wohlgemuth and Samuel Morse moved from Westchester county, New York City and set up shop at 525 Niles Street (now North Shore Drive) opposite Fort Dearborn Arsenal across from where this paper now stands! Dr Wohlgemuth ran a general store whileSamuel Morse operated a machine shop before both men bought out Dr Wohlgemuth’s share in 1867 . Both men are buried within walking distance of each other at Calumet Cemetery next door! During prohibition this area became infamous for its high levels of drinking & gambling which led directly to joblessness among many des plainians over time! However today it is one of greatest economic success stories within Cook County thanks largely to its large number of young families who have chosen not only live here but also raise their children hereabouts!!

Des Plaines is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Des Plaines was merged into the town on February 14, 2009. The townsite of Des Plaines was first settled in 1814 by American Revolutionary War veteran Joshua Leavitt and his wife Judith Moody Pettit Leavitt. Joshua's father had founded what would become Aurora, Illinois some years earlier. In 1814 Joshua leased land from the Native Americans at Kankakee Prairie for a sawmill and grist mill which he named after his wife's family name (Pettit). At first only men could work these mills; later women were allowed to do so as well. The Pettits also erected a schoolhouse and church in their new town site. The first post office in Des Plaines opened on December 12th, 1827 with Pte John Haggerty as its first postmaster. By 1840 there were 10 residents in Des Plaines - all farmers or traders who bought or rented land from the original founders of the town site - making it one of the most rural communities in Cook County that early on embraced city life slowly but surely! In 1847 James Fenton built an unincorporated community adjacent to present-day Des Plaines known as Fentonville after himself and two friends purchasing 640 acres (248 hectares) along Kankakee Prairie east of present day Des Plaines for $2 per acre ($/km²). This large purchase included much of what is now Kane County including parts of today's Wheaton Township, Elmhurst Township and Addison Township – all within modern-day Chicago! During World War I various munitions plants were established throughout Cook County including one at Fox River Arsenal near Joliet which produced munitions such as artillery shells and grenades used during World War I; this plant closed following World War II. After World War I many small businesses went out of business due to competition from larger companies such as Ford Motorsports & Components Incorporated located just west of downtown Chicago near Lake Michigan beachfront property that became Ford Park

The city experienced rapid growth until World War II when it suffered economically due to wartime shortages of goods and services. After the war ended, Des Plaines began to experience significant growth again as new businesses and homes were built in what had been once low-income neighborhoods. Today, Des Plaines is one of Chicagoland's most vibrant cities with many cultural attractions and thriving economy.
